2nd in On the Runway series is thoroughly enjoyable

Catwalk by Melody Carlson is the second book in the On the Runway series. Paige and Erin Forrester are on their way to film New York Fashion week for their reality television show On the Runway, but first they both need to walk in a show for a "green" designer, then Erin needs to deal with her best friend Mollie's seeming abandoning her for boyfriend Tony, plus the girls' mother's relationship with Jon is becoming serious. I love this series about two sisters trying to stay true to themselves in the strange world of Hollywood. Paige is the star of the show and trying to keep up her relationship with big star Benjamin. Erin is more comfortable behind the camera and is giving old flame Blake another chance. Paige and Erin have a very believable sisterly relationship with plenty of push-pull and chemistry. They face the real problems of teenagers: parents dating, troubled relationships, and two-faced friends, but with a great twist of glamor. It's the rare young adult Christian series that is completely enjoyable and believable. I can't wait to read what happens next to the Forrester sisters.

This is the second book in this seris and I have read both of them and was thrilled to find Catwalk on the free book list. This is a great read about 2 young girls breaking into the TV industry as well as the fashion industry. Catwalk is about their time in New York on "Fashion Week".

Loved it - fun view of the fashion world with lessons to be learned

After reading and enjoying Premiere last week, I was anxious to read the next installment in Melody Carlson's new On the Runway series. Catwalk did not disappoint. In fact I think I enjoyed it more than Premiere. Erin and Paige are now on the roll with their new show, but that doesn't mean that Erin is completely comfortable being in front of the camera yet. Catwalk leads the girls to fashion week in New York and lots of fun and surprises await them there.

I enjoyed reading the various shows and people the girls met along with the new situations they managed to get into and out of. What I thought was really cute about this one, was the presence of the Carter House girls. I have actually only read one Carter House girl novel (but have the rest on my tbr pile) but recognized the main players when Erin and Paige meet them in New York. It was neat to see them again, and if you haven't read the Carter House girl series, no worries, the girls really just make a cameo appearance.

Catwalk has new lessons for both Paige and Erin and I really liked how Melody Carlson brought those lessons about. Both girls had to come to the realizations - this isn't beat you over the head Christianity, this is hey - that makes a lot of sense and having some other players reinforce the lessons really was a great way to handle them.

After finishing Catwalk, I am already anxious for the next installment, Rendezvous which comes out in September. Great characters, a fast-moving plot and lots of fun in the fashion world equals a great read in my book.

Nikolas Kerr

He has spent over 15 years in a variety of product marketing roles from entry level to executive positions at large device companies (Medtronic) and at small device start-ups. During that time, he successfully launched more than 10 medical device products which collectively generate over $500 million in annual revenue.� Mr. Kerr has undergraduate and graduate degrees in business and economics from the University of South Carolina. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Xiaolei, and has three children.

Tony Recupero
proven commercial leader with over 25 years of medical device experience. Tony heads up Catalyst Performance Consultants, where he advises sales and marketing executives on revenue-accelerating sales and marketing strategies. Tony was formerly president and CEO of Baxano, which was sold to Trans1, Inc. in 2013. Prior to Baxano, Tony built a highly acclaimed sales force as vice president of sales for Kyphon Inc., which was sold to Medtronic in 2007 for $3.9 billion. Before that, Tony led the Sulzer Spine-Tech sales force to over $110 million in revenue. Tony started his medical device career in sales management with United States Surgical Corporation, well known as an aggressive sales and marketing organization, where he excelled in a rapid growth environment. Tony Recupero is a graduate of the General Management Program at Harvard Business School and holds a bachelor's degree in communications from the State University of New York at Albany. Tony lives in Pleasanton, California, with his wife, Patty, and has five children.

Being fresh to the medical device salesworld and its competitive nature, this book provided key insight for myself on the power of marketing and how every aspect of launching a device must be used to its fullest advantage with feedback from ever level of the company. These two experienced authors were able to provide real-life examples of what to do and what not to do when launching a product. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a practical, clear and concise guide to expand their horizon when it comes to promoting a medical device(s) or any product for that matter!

I really like how the authors packed in so much valuable information in under 80 pages. Very refreshing! I'm tired of reading other business books that drag on as if they are trying to hit a target page # set by the publisher. The book also reads very fast with many practical examples that can quickly be adopted to boost the success of a product launch. Having launched and participated in many product launches myself, I highly recommend this book for folks involved in medical device product launches. A fun, easy and practical read!

Great Pictures, Great Adventures

The book was about a dog named Claude who wears a beret. The First Chapter was about Claude's adventures exploring the city with his best friend, a sock named Bobblysock. In the Second Chapter, Claude takes care of Bobblysock, who is not feeling well, by taking him to the hospital.
I loved the pictures and the adventures that Claude went on. I thought it was really funny that when he visited the city, the people treated him as if he were a real person and not a dog, by serving him in restaurants and at stores.

One of my favorite parts was when Claude was awarded a medal for helping the people at the art gallery. I also liked when he helped the sick people in the hospital waiting room. It was fun to see him "save the day!"

The book is special because even though it was longer than what I was used to, it encouraged me to read because I wanted to find out what happened next!

I think both boys and girls ages 4 to 9 would like it.

Do love that Claude!

Claude, a small plump dog who wears a red beret and a lovely red sweater, belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes (who are always seen from their shiny shoes up to their knees). And when Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes are out, Claude is up and about and ready for another adventure. This time, he and his unlikely sidekick Sir Bobblysock - yes, a bobbly sock! - are off to see the city.

There's a lot to see in the city and it's the author's art and wacky humour that makes the book soar - though I did find it a bit longish. I would rather see a single story plot - i.e. the museum and the capture of the nefarious sculpture-nabbing thieves. But it goes on with a visit to the doctor and (structurally speaking) where is the link between this and the incident at the museum? None.

Still, the charm of its characters and the cute retro feel have kept me reading. So here are the bits I loved:

- Without a doubt, the illustrations - fresh, and full of tongue-in-cheek humour.

- Its silly text:

One morning, Claude put on his beret and decided to go to the City. "I think I will go to the City," he said. Sir Bobblysock came too, as he didn't have anything else planned that day. Claude ....couldn't believe how tall the buildings were.....Sir Bobblysock was glad that he wasn't the one who had to clean the windows.

- How Claude never seems to need any money to buy anything:

Claude hurried inside and bought a beret in every color and every pattern. That was an awful lot of berets.

- Or the ridiculous, like this:

.... he took Sir Bobblysock's temperature with a banana....."Sir Bobblysock," he said, "you are not very well. All that shopping and rushing around in the city has worn you out. I think I will have to take you to the hospital!".....Dr. Achinbum prodded and poked Sir Bobblysock's tummy, listened to his heart .... and took Sir Bobblysock's temperature (this time with a thermometer, not a banana). Claude sniffed haughtily. He ALWAYS found bananas were much better for taking temperatures.

Of course, that bit's from the next part of the book - Claude at the hospital being a doctor for a day and saving a woeful team of ailing acrobats. Wouldn't this have made a nice second book? Novertheless, it was a fun read and I love that Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes never, ever know what happens.

A Rewarding Outing for Claude

Claude decides to take his best friend Sir Bobblysock and tour the city. They had never been to the city before and it was indeed an adventure. They saw buildings so tall they touched the sky and so many people rushing here and there. They found a wonderful place to stop and have a drink. Then he discovered shops, many shops and one he really had to visit where he ended up buying a new beret, well a few berets. He decided to enter a building that reminded him of yummy bones, it was a museum. So many things to see and do in the city. It had literally been a rewarding day.

Claude and Sir Bobblysock slept soundly that night. When Claude woke up Sir Bobblysock did not wake up, something was terribly wrong with Bobblysock! What should he do?!! Bobblysock did not look well!
Could he be ill?!!

This was a fun book with lots of surprises with the adventurous character, Claude the dog, that the author has created. What a great imagination! The author I mean! Who would have thought of a sock as a character? Alex T. Smith of course! You, along with your children will want to read this fun book. Get ready to smile!

I wonder where Claude will go on his next outing? Maybe the Circus or the Beach! Sounds like more fun with Claude coming our way.

I highly recommend this book.

This accessible study charts the so-called "commercial revolution" of the thirteenth century, a period of rapid expansion which created much of the economic landscape we know today: holding companies, corporate shares, insurance, personal checks, and double-entry bookkeeping. Concentrations of wealth in aristocratic courts and capital cities stimulated a spectacular trade in luxury goods, and Spufford traverses Europe along the ancient trade routes by which Asian spices and Venetian glass, furs from Russia and falcons from Iceland, wines from Bordeaux and tapestries from the Netherlands were distributed. Appropriately, the book itself is opulently produced, illustrated with details from the backgrounds of altarpieces and the margins of illuminated manuscripts, depicting bankers, goldsmiths, tailors, dyers, farmers, or chandlers. A PROFITABLE ENTERPRISE

Peter Spufford is an Emeritus Professor in Cambridge, and has been the leading authority on medieval monetary history for a generation; but this book is a labour of love as well as of scholarship. It has a wealth of beautiful illustrations and the text is full of information, much of it new to me.

The Preface is different from most. Instead of merely paying tribute to those who helped, it tells us about the author's trials and tribulations, experienced during the many journeys he made by way of research, during a period of some 30 years. This introductory section is written in a delightfully engaging and personal way, which makes it clear that Spufford sacrificed many family holidays, except that for him it was clearly no sacrifice at all.

The journeys were his library; and during that time, Spufford learned to `read' all over again, not just by looking at places, but by studying the background detail in paintings, to discover the economic realities behind what the artist was commissioned to paint. It is this deep understanding which gives the book such power and authority.

It may even cause the reader to alter his view of medieval Europe. Traditionally, we were taught that England and France became the most powerful and progressive countries of the early modern age because they were politically united in the High Middle Ages. By comparison, Italy and Germany were `late developers'; but if we switch the focus of attention from politics to economics and commerce, as this book does, Italy and Germany emerge as the dominant powers of the Late Middle Ages, long before they were politically united.

In Search of Seekers of Ducats

The distribution business as it was of old still hangs on in some places. In out of the way places like the Karakoram Highway and the old Silk Road, traders are still small nomad-like businessmen struggling to survive in a dangerous world. But that world has gone away for the most part.
This book gives an informative glance at the life of the trader in Europe during the Middle Ages when there was no law, no dependable travel or communications, and every merchant had to live by his wits and sometimes by his sword. It is a collection of facts rather then of entertaining anecdotes and would be an aquired taste. For those that desire to learn however, it is well worth the effort.
As a by the way, one amusing anecdote the author gives is that in Eastern Europe security often looked suspiciously at him taking pictures of bridges. To be fair, that was of course their job, bridges are important for military traffic as well as commercial and if they were a bit more paranoid then Western security would be, it would have been a fine cover. Of course the author might really have been working for the CIA, heh, heh, heh.

The definitive resource for clicker training

After reading the reviews of this book and the similar Clicker Training for Cats by Karen Pryor, I purchased both so that I could compare them and possibly benefit from two different sources. However, after reading both manuals and having been clicker training my cat for several months now, I can say with absolute certainty that Cat Training in 10 Minutes is far superior in quality and content to Karen Pryor's book.

1. Comprehensiveness of Clicker Theory: 5/5 stars. The theory used in Cat Training in 10 Minutes is operant conditioning. Using a clicker followed by a reward, you can reinforce desired behavior in your cat. Verbal commands (come, sit) as well as specific hand signals are incorporated in this book. I find the hand signals to be just as essential as the verbal commands: upon seeing the signal, my cat immediately knows which action she is to perform and will begin to do it even before I give the verbal command.

2. Accessibility: 5/5 stars. Cat Training in 10 Minutes is written in easy-to-follow expository style, with occasional narrative anecdotes. It has color photos on every page depicting the specific command/action, how to signal with your hand, and how your cat will likely react. The instructions are clearly numbered and succinct.

3. Organization: 5/5 stars. The first chapter is an introduction that discusses the theory behind clicker training and the tools you'll need. Each following chapter covers one specific command/type of behavior, and the chapters are arranged from easy to hard. There are a few "bonus" chapters at the end of the book that discuss cats in our lives, correcting bad behavior, and professional/movie industry cat trainers. I was pleasantly surprised by this last chapter: it was an enjoyable read and informative to boot.

4. Correcting Undesirable Behavior: 2/5 stars. In this book's sole weak spot, the author discusses only furniture scratching, inconsistent litter box use, and walking on countertops. Despite this chapter's short length, I personally found it to be more helpful than its counterpart in Ms. Pryor's book. Why? Because Cat Training in 10 Minutes actually lists specific instructions for correcting bad behavior using a clicker. I've implemented some of these tactics, especially regarding furniture scratching, with my own cat and have had great success.

5. Helpful/Extra Features: 5/5 stars. First, the author's short anecdotes are contained in colorful call-out boxes along the side of the page, which lends a nice organizational layout to the text and keeps the instructional body uncluttered. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the book has several appendices (hand signals, adoption/rescue resources) and an alphabetical index.

In summary, I highly recommend Cat Training in 10 Minutes to anyone looking to clicker train their cat, as its quality and content are head-and-shoulders above Karen Pryor's book. Good luck, and here's to your cat learning some great new tricks!

Valuable Training

I used this book to clicker train my Ragdoll cat since he was a kitten and I did not have to starve my cat as one reviewer feared nor is this torture. My cat LOVES training! Because the book taught me to announce the beginning and end of our session my cat now perks up whenever I say "Training", it has allowed us to create a closer bond with unforeseen benefits. Once Tyler got his head stuck inside the corded handle of a paper bag becoming alarmed and running around the room trying to shake it off. I yelled "Sit!" (The first command I taught him) and to my astonishment he sat allowing me to come over and remove the bag. I would later discover that Tyler responds to either voice commands or hand signals alone even though I had used combined signal/commands in the beginning. I'm now teaching my cat to go to a specific location should I find him somewhere I don't think he should be by pointing and saying "Touch". It's working!
So let me just say that I love love love my cat and would never do anything to hurt him. If anything I believe that operant conditioning / clicker training has brought me closer to my friend as well as allowing me to have a modicum of control desired in a home environment. I never have to yell or use negative commands (cats don't respond like dogs) but instead now have several positive commands that are part of my tool kit. I believe that the training instruction in this book is valuable and recommend it highly.

Excellent guide to cat training

I was quite skeptical about the idea of training a cat to do anything. Cats are highly intelligent but not interested in pleasing us the way dogs are. In addition, my cat has cerebellar hypoplasia and is challenged in terms of general mobility. The trick shown on the cover of this book seemed far beyond his capabilities. I decided to spend a few minutes before feeding times just teaching him what the clicker was and perhaps to come when called. I was shocked to find that Nugget loves his training sessions and will follow me around the house imploring me to get out the clicker when his normal training times are getting close. Forget trying to skip a session! Nugget has become far more interactive with us and confident in his own ability to move around. While he still is unable to jump vertically, he now has learned to use his step ladder to get into chairs and on the bed. You can see the contentment in his entire body when he is able to use a previously inaccessible sleeping place or window. Also, Nugget actually is able to "jump" from chair to chair as shown on the cover of the book. We set him up for success, but still he has exceeded our expectations and his as well. I completely recommend "Cat Training in 10 Minutes". We have had wonderful results following the simple, well-illustrated instructions. It's definitely worth training your cat, and this book will tell you how to do it.

For me it didn't detract from the short story and I rather like the fact that we are kept guessing

Quick read as an interlude to the rest of the series. The ending was left open ended which some readers have complained about but I think the purpose was for the individual reader to use their imaginations a bit more . For me it didn't detract from the short story and I rather like the fact that we are kept guessing.
