I bought this to read on my Kindle. The menu plan and other sections of the book which have been 'dumped' are just too small to read and the font cannot be changed. Bit of a disappointment. Other than that its very informative and I would love to see if it works.

Great concepts for healthy eating

Lola provides the bases for eliminating certain foods from our diet. The information is written in a form that is easy to understand for the average person. She's Australian so some of her terms I have had to look up. Her YouTube site is great and shows her weight loss progress which is motivating. She also demonstrates how to make some of the recipes. This shift in eating will take e some time for those who don't have access to a coop, trader Joe's or whole foods store, since the average grocery store won't carry the breadth of foods required to eat this way. look as this a change in lifestyle rather than a diet. Some of the recipes seem complex, but can be easily simplified.

Ray Alex and Jackie! I love how they come together. Ray shows wonderful dedication to his woman and to his best friend. Jackie is blissfully selfish but caring. But my favorite absolutely had to be Alex. Wanting so badly to be with his best friend's girlfriend, but wanting to be "normal" at the same time. I love that Indigo explores the angst and daily complications that come from living outside the norm. Wonderful series! Would love to find more like it.

At the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta, she worked with common chimpanzees and bonobos (pygmy chimps), using a computer-based keyboard system. With Roger Lewin (coauthor with Richard Leakey of Origins), she tells the remarkable story of Kanzi, a bonobo who at 14 understands spoken English well enough that his teachers spell out words they don't want him to hear. He asks and answers questions and invents games by manipulating an electronic keyboard. Ape researcher Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and her coauthor document her years of psychological studies, laboratory work, and life experiences with bonobos. The book is a blend of Dian Fossey living in the forests with her gorillas and case studies of other scientists' experiences. Through years of skepticism and some remarkable breakthroughs, Savage-Rumbaugh was able to train a bonobo named Kanzi to communicate using a lexigram--a keyboard of symbols representing set words or actions. Kanzi differs from a trained ape in that his responses are thought motivated instead of conditioned. After years of language "school," Kanzi is able to understand English voice commands and appropriately respond using the lexigram, which then generates an electronically activated voice response. His achievements are more than admirable--they are miraculously close to language and comprehensible syntax as we know it. Important but Defensive

This is an important, if somewhat defensive book. I would have been much more interested to read more about Kanzi's day to day behavior and to see some actual scientific data instead of the story of the investigator's scientific publishing woes. Nevertheless, this book should be read widely and it's message that we humans are not as unique as we like to think needs careful consideration by all scientists and the general population.

She is also the co-author of Apes, Language, and the Human Mind. In this 1994 book, she and science writer Roger Lewin have summarized her research at teaching chimpanzees to use a specially-designed keyboard to communicate with trainers.

She writes of her early concerns, "This absence of full comprehension in language-trained apes was, I felt strongly, a more fundamental criticism of ape-language research than the absence of syntax, as demonstrated by Terrace. Cooperative comprehension is fundamental to language, and two-way communication that does not reflect comprehension is not language, no matter what other attributes it may possess."

She details her reaction to an attack on such ape language work by behaviorists such as B.F. Skinner, who "explained that, although the sequence of events might look like 'sustained and natural conversation,' it was in fact the result of strict conditioning procedures." She writes, "One issue that undoubtedly had provoked the behaviorists' attack was my conclusion that Sherman and Austin were exhibiting conscious intentionality during their communication--a clear red flag to those who believe behavior should simply be viewed as responses to external stimuli. As a result I became labeled a cognitive psychologist."

She writes that "Kanzi was clearly doing this (i.e., comprehending language). For so revolutionary a scientific claim as this, a persuasive body of data would be required, and as yet, I had only my notes of what Kanzi had done. Would anyone believe those? Would anyone believe anything without a number of detailed blind tests? I doubted it. I knew that convincing others would be a difficult task, but I also knew that if I were to focus too intently on proving everything Kanzi said or did, I would lose his natural engagement in the language process."

She concludes, "The ease with which Kanzi acquired a facility for symbolic communication not only tells us something about humans, and the assumed uniqueness of the human mind, but also something about apes and their cognitive competence in their natural state... The boundary wall between humans and apes has finally been breached."

About the Author
Josh Reynolds is the author of the Blood Angels novel Deathstorm and the Warhammer 40,000 novellas Hunter's Snare�and Dante's Canyon, along with the audio drama Master of the Hunt, all three featuring the White Scars Chapter of Space Marines. In the Warhammer World, he has written The End Times novels The Return of Nagash and Lord of the End Times, the Gotrek & Felix novels�Road of Skulls and The Serpent Queen, and the novels Neferata, Master of Death and Knight of the Blazing Sun. He lives and works in Northampton.

Chris Wraight is the author of the Horus Heresy novel Scars, the novella Brotherhood of the Storm�and the audio drama The Sigillite. Brutal Fantasy (Spoiler Free Review)

This 928 page omnibus contains three short stories and two full novels chronicling some cataclysmic events in the Warhammer Universe. All of the stories are full of brutal action and epic fantasy warfare.

The book begins with The Bone Cage by Phil Kelly and chronicles the dark fate of nine captured priests as they are taken to Sylvania in a bone cage while surrounded by an army of undead led by Manfred Von Carstein.

With Ice and Sword by Graham McNeill tells the story of a massive assault on Kislev by Chaos Warriors as the survivors of the invasion cling to hope.

The Return of Nagash by Josh Reynolds is the first novel of the omnibus, and continues the story of the captured priests as Manfred Von Carstein and the necromancer Arkhan attempt to summon the ancient Necromancer Nagash! This story is full of violent action and death.

Marienburg's Stand by David Guymer is a short story about a Chaos assault on Marienburg, and its people battling their attackers.

The omnibus ends with The Fall of Altdorf by Chris Wraight. This is the grand finale of the omnibus and covers a vicious chaos invasion that brings the entire empire to its knees.

The entire book is full of graphic violent action, heroic sacrifices, alliances, and battle tactics as massive armies clash on the battlefields of the Empire!

Because this book is full of graphic violence, gore, torture, death, and undeath, it's not for pre-teens. There are too many disturbing scenes. There is no swearing or sex, just a whole lot of violence.

Fans of the Warhammer Series should definitely pick this up! The story is mostly about one massive Chaos Invasion, but it's so intense, it will keep your turning pages.

If you're a fan of heroic fantasy and like brutal action, but aren't familiar with the Warhammer universe, you'll still enjoy this book.

If you're interested in other Warhammer books, check out Malus Darkblade and The Blackhearts. Those are a cut above the rest.

So begins the End Times of the Old World

Three short stories and the first two books of The End Times barely contained within this behemoth of a book. The Return of Nagash is penned by Josh Reynolds and The Fall of Altdorf by Chris Wraight, two writers who I have recently begun to enjoy. Epic fantasy, dark and vile sorcery, foul beasts and excellently detailed settings. Great combat descriptions, and some gut wrenching moments, all make for one awesome start to this series. You can't go wrong with this much action, the sheer amount of excitement in this many pages for this price is nothing to turn your nose at. Not to mention three short stories by a few of the Black Libraries finest authors. Recommended highly.

Great Read

I am a big Warhammer fan and player. The End Times is the biggest event in the game and it has taken several novels and thousands of pages to get to this point. I play Total War: Warhammer (not a plug) and many of the playable characters in the game are featured in these books. It was nice to see these individuals fleshed out and a solid back story provided. That being said, they are actually really good books. Well written and entertaining. I cannot wait to read the next two Omnibuses to see the End Times come.

Relativistic Rhinos!

I recently relived my freshman year at Rice by buying several introductions to Special Relativity from Amazon. When I want to learn something, I usually buy several books on the same subject and read them all at the same time. Back then, of course, I checked them out of the library. Out of the books I just read, I like this one by Helliwell the most. The book by Bondi was an enjoyable read that took half a day. If I were going to teach the subject to a complete beginner, I might start with Bondi's book. I may even reread it for his historical information and perspective. If I needed to pass an exam, I think I would work through the book by James H. Smith. It is very much the distilled essence of basic Special Relativity. The presentation is the elegant product of decades of experience. However, it is still basic, and does not get much into four-dimensional formulations and never mentions calculus. Although I called it the distilled essence, I don't mean to imply that it skips steps. It is very thorough, and it is the one I would study carefully to ace an exam.

Nevertheless, I think the Helliwell book is my favorite. Ya gotta love a book with relativistic rhinoceroses in it! That's right, those two rhinos that you see on the Amazon picture are travelling towards each other at .99C each. Does that mean their relative velocity is 1.98C? You'll have to read the book to find out.

This book covers all the standard material of Special Relativity, but also has things that other books don't have. For example, he covers the Fizeau experiment decades before the Michelson-Morley experiment. Personally, I am fascinated by the attempts of the 19th century geniuses to figure out what the heck light is and what it is doing. Every book covers the twin paradox, and sometimes the pole vaulter paradox, but Helliwell also does the mind-blowing "paradox" of the rotating solid object. When a block is moving towards us at relativistic speed it appears rotated, but not distorted (what happened to the contraction?), and at some point we see the back of the block, even though it hasn't passed us yet. Too bad he didn't analyze the rhinoceroses that way.

I find his derivation of relativistic momentum and energy to be the best, for example, Chapter 8. He approaches all of the secondary consequences of Special Relativity the way someone with good intuition about physics and a little bit of math skill might figure them out for the first time. That goes also for his explanations of forces and electromagnetism.

I have to take a 6 hour plane flight soon. Out of all these short books I purchased recently on Special Relativity, the one I'm planning to take on board with me is the Helliwell book.

This one's a keeper

Provocative from start to finish, Jobson's latest offering pulls you in and leaves you wanting more. Written in clean and engaging prose, he cuts open the proverbial vein to share some of the most personal moments from his life--the stuff most would want swept under the nearest rug. He does this while interweaving his thoughts about spirituality, in effect whisking you away to another world. Hard to do for non-fiction. This is an easy and short must-read (only 100 pages) that will make you stop and think. All you have to do is sit back, park your ego, and open your mind.

I'm a graduate student, and many of my required readings were from this book. I finally purchased it for myself although it wasn't required. It's been a great resource to keep on my bookshelf and I'm sure I'll use it more over the years.

I had to buy this book for a grad school ...

I had to buy this book for a grad school course and I prefer to use electronic formats so I always have my books with me wherever I go. However, this book has most of the illustrations and tables removed in the Kindle format due to "copy write restrictions". I would have bought the paper version if I would have known this was an issue. Its and expensive book to buy considering half the content is missing.

About the Author
Alan W. Hirshfeld, astronomer at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and an Associate of the Harvard College Observatory, received his undergraduate degree in astrophysics from Princeton and his Ph.D. in astronomy from Yale. He is co-author of "Sky Catalogue 2000.0", a two-volume astronomical reference book, and a past winner of a Griffith Observatory/Hughes Aircraft Co. national science writing award. He lives outside Boston.

Great lab manual, useless in Kindle format

I teach college Astronomy. This lab manual is nicely written and contains useful information to present to students. The activities themselves are explained in a manner that makes them easy to tie into a lecture course or free standing lab. They are also useful in that they can be expanded upon. What I did not like about this lab manual was the Kindle format. It sucked! If I purchase a lab manual that has spaces to be written in, I should be able to write in them; or, at least type in them. This can't be done on the Kindle's format of this manual. Neither can anything from this manual be printed. IF you want a lab manual just for the reading, this is for you. If you want a lab manual that you can work in, print out pieces of, etc., don' purchase the Kindle version of this manual. You will be frustrated like me.

Please don't buy this book in Kindle Format...or maybe at all!!

As a High School Honors Astronomy Teacher, this could have been a great lab/activity manual for my class. Unfortunately, I bought it in the kindle version thinking I could make copies more easily. Unfortunately that is just not the case. The formatting and layout mean that it is impossible to print. (I've attached photos to my review) I've resorted to retyping by hand different activities that are found in here so that I can make copies for my students. The kindle version is useless, please don't buy it. It will be a waste of money, I promise. Another small gripe I have with this is that certain pictures are removed because of "copyright restrictions." As somebody who spent nearly 50 dollars on a book, having important pictures that are part of activities removed is unacceptable. (Another attached photo) It's only too bad I didn't notice this sooner, as I would have requested my money back. As it is, this book is unusable in it's current state. I recommend looking elsewhere!

This book is really useful. I use it to teach an astronomy lab. The typical liberal arts or business students might find the math difficult. Try this book. In particular, do the chapter on Precision Astronomy After Galileo- Stellar Parallax, and you would see your students excited about measuring their fingers to do parallax. Also, try the lab Hubble's Law - In the Kitchen and the Universe, you would see your students asking a lot of questions about basic graphing techniques.

David C. Brody is an associate professor and the Academic Director of the Criminal Justice Program at Washington State University. He received a JD from the University of Arizona College of Law and a PhD in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York at Albany. He has published numerous scholarly articles on subjects including capital punishment, criminal procedure, criminal law, and juvenile justice. I purchased this book as a textbook, but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the contents on a personal enjoyment level as well. It is easy to understand, yet complete in content. About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

Lothar Redlin grew up on Vancouver Island, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria, and a Ph.D. from McMaster University in 1978. He subsequently did research and taught at the University of Washington, the University of Waterloo, and California State University, Long Beach. He is currently Professor of Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, Abington Campus. His research field is topology.

Saleem Watson received his Bachelor of Science degree from Andrews University in Michigan. He did graduate studies at Dalhousie University and McMaster University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1978. He subsequently did research at the Mathematics Institute of the University of Warsaw in Poland. He also taught at The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently Professor of Mathematics at California State University, Long Beach. His research field is functional analysis.

it was very useful - my only qualm was that I wish they ...

I used this book for my Precalculus class last semester, and I definitely worked out of the book a lot. Overall, it was very useful - my only qualm was that I wish they would sometimes use just some basic language to describe the more complex ideas they were covering. I know that in order to describe a complex idea they must be thorough and deliberate about describing it precisely, but still, it would be nice if they attempted to do sort of what the professor does, perhaps having a section where they're like, "Try to think of it like this..." Instead, the descriptions of the complex topics are very accurate, very math-booky, which is fine and all, but I think they could have went another extra mile.

Overall though, it had plenty of problems to work through, which was nice. More example problems, where they work through each step of the problem, would have been great too - but I was able to get by on the few in the book coupled with the examples my professor provided.

Multiple Answers are Wrong/Missing

While cross-checking my work I noticed that a problem was incorrect. So I called Cengage to them about the problem. They made a note about it and told me "We'll let the editor know". 15 minutes later I call them again to tell them that they missed an entire problem! On page 205 of this book you'll find that answer 11 is incorrect, and that the answer to number 23 is actually the answer to number 25. To make matters worse number 25 is actually the answer to 27! And then we get to their solution to number 29, a solution to a problem that doesn't even exist in the textbook.

So if you do get this book, don't blindly believe everything it says. If you can't figure out how they got their answer it might be because they're wrong.

Needless to say, Cengage will be receiving an angry letter from me.

Murky At Best

Don't get me wrong, I love trigonometry, but this James Stewart does not explain concepts in anything close to an intelligible manner for someone attempting to study ahead via textbook. Problems are often poorly worded and information is missing. Some problems are given no equivalency in the answer key and are unique as homework questions without any similar examples provided. I've done a lot of math before and after this book, and this book was quite possibly the very worst I've come across.
