Disappointed

My impression was that this is not a good book for the absolute beginner. Blender contains two different rendering engines and the author is not always clear about which one he is describing. Also, I found the index was rather light on details. Often I could not find the particular Blender function, hotkey, or whatever I was looking for and had to page through the book hoping I would come across some commentary on it. The book is O.K for a brief introduction but you will need other resources to really learn the program.

Mostly good book, but with terrible index and illustrations

Let me get two things out of the way. First, I like this book; let me get that out front and center. This review will sound overly negative, because it doesn't take nearly as many words to explain what you like as what you don't like. And if a tech book is well-written, you don't notice why it's good; those parts just flow. As in so many other things it's the parts where you get snagged that you notice.

One other thing: I have no interest in the animation aspects of Blender, so I skipped all of Part III, chapters 10-13. They may be the greatest explanation of Blender animation ever written, or they may be the worst thing since that Battlefield Earth movie.

So here's the good. The book has lots of good information, well presented. Somehow, van Gumster has managed to evade the usual Dummies editors who try to make the text "cute," in a misguided attempt to make it engaging, which actually makes most Dummies books grating and annoying. This book has some of that, but it's not nearly as bad as usual.

The first several chapters are very good indeed, and there were a few places I used stickie-notes to mark areas to refer to as I started using the software; the hot-key explanations in chapter 3 is one example. The lighting chapter, chapter 9, is great. I got a real clue about lighting after reading this.

Okay, now the bad. I have three problems with this book: the index, the illustrations, and how it seems to forget that it's an introductory book in the middle of Part II and tries to be a reference instead, failing in the attempt.

The index. It's terrible. Over and over, I looked things up in the index and they weren't there. I wanted to find out how to do an extrusion. You'd look under "extrusion," or "extrude," right? Nope. Nothing there. I finally found it by flipping through the book; later I realized I could have used the table of contents, where one of the headings included the word "extrusion." I did find it later, as a subheading under "Edit mode". So yeah, if you already know Blender, and say to yourself, "okay, I want to go into edit mode and do some extrusion," then you have a chance in hell of finding which of the 479 pages of text deal with extrusion. But if you already know Blender, you're not going to be reading "Blender for Dummies" in the first place. If you are a beginner, which is the target audience for Dummies books like this, it's hopeless.

“Extrude” is just an example; I ran into this over and over.

The illustrations. Many of the illustrations are illegible. Kudos to van Gumster for using a custom theme to try to make things easier to see, but that’s just not going to work when the illustrations are grayscale and tiny. On pages 214-215 there is a sequence of literally postage-stamp sized comparisons of 10 different shaders. And we’re talking small postage stamps; about one-half square inch each (I measured so I wouldn’t exaggerate here). It’s laughable, they’re completely worthless for the comparison purpose for which they’re included. Many of the illustrations show important information as tiny black text on gray background; or in some cases, dark-gray on medium-gray. The illustrations need to be 1) larger and 2) preferably in color. I realize color would drive up the price of the book, but I think that’s important. I didn’t laugh at any of the attempted jokes in the book, but I did literally laugh out loud at the illustrations on page 193: the color picker, rendered in grayscale. Great.

Now the reference-y bit. Somewhere around chapter 6 or so, with the worst in chapters 7 & 8, van Gumster starts taking a catalog approach. Instead of showing you how to do something, he starts just cataloging options of various operations. We get a paragraph on each of the dozen or so shaders available in Cycles; a list of all the panels in BI’s Material Properties; a list of shaders in BI (that’s the part with the postage stamps). What would have worked for these chapters is just to lay out how to do materials and textures, and then build from that.

And one other thing. I get that van Gumster is very, very good with Blender and probably has a lot of cool Blender-fu, and wants to show that off. But for an introductory book, he would be better off doing more introduction. In the two chapters on rendering (7 on materials and 8 on textures), on the third page, barely into rendering, he diverts into how to use both rendering engines in one scene; something that’s unlikely to be a beginner’s requirement, and, if it needed to be dealt with at all, should have been relegated to the very end.

I say with sadness that I found chapters 7 and 8 to be pretty useless for me due to the catalog-everything approach and the explication of esoteric techniques before the basics.

(I’m starting to sound harsh here. Did I mention I really liked chapter 9, on lighting?)

This book is not going to give you everything you need to be good at Blender. You’re going to want to seek out online tutorials, especially videos on youtube or the like, to fill in gaps. But that’s not a flaw in the book; it’s kind of inherent in Blender, due to its unfamiliar UI, and its complexity and power. Van Gumster anticipates this, and Chapter 18 has a pretty good list of such resources.

Okay, so in conclusion:

1. This is a good book, and I recommend it, subject to the limitations I mentioned above.
2. The index sucks, and in technical books, especially introductory ones, the index should not suck.
3. The illustrations suck, and in books explaining graphic software, the illustrations should not suck.
4. It’s not going to give you everything you need to be good at Blender, but will give you a pretty good start.
5. All in all, a pretty good book; with some specific things that should be fixed for the next edition.

Great introduction to using blender. More than satisfied.

Very, very helpful overview for blender noobs. Guides you into clear understanding of how to get basic thing done.
Publisher length constraints make any deeper or wider exploration not possible. I am a very
satisfied first time blenderer (I'm sure that's wrong. Safari wanted 'blunderer'. Perhaps they were right.)

I got up and running from no blender of any kind ever, to building things, importing into Unity, with
materials and textures, because of this guy. Considering links, online supplementals, sure was worth
it for me.

Jim Burtles has made an important addition to the written materials available to business continuity planners. It is comprehensive without being tedious and provides an excellent base line for both planning neophytes and a useful reference for more experienced practitioners.

Business continuity originally lumped together with other types of disaster recovery is increasingly important in a world where all types of disasters seem to occur with increasing frequency. A look back at very recent events reveals product recalls, forest fires, earthquakes, storms, bombings, and floods, just to name a few. Each brought with it not only personal tragedies and dislocations, but also threats to the viability of businesses located in the disaster area(s). Businesses generally recognize the need to and importance of good planning in this area to ensure that they respond well to such incidents especially with regard to mitigating damage and getting back to normal afterward.

About the Author

Jim Burtles, KLJ, MMLJ, FBCI, is a highly regarded global leader and practitioner in the Business Continuity profession with over 35 years of experience spread across 24 countries. He is also the author of Principles and Practice of Business Continuity: Tools and Techniques and is working on a Second Edition due for publication in early 2015.
Burtles was one of founders of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) and in 2001 his peers presented him with BCI's Lifetime Achievement Award. In his work as BCI's Standards Officer, Burtles was heavily involved in the evolution of its professional standards and ethics. As an honorary fellow he now serves on the Global Membership Council representing the interests of the worldwide membership.
He received the Freedom of the City of London in 1992. In 2005 was granted the rank of a Knight of Grace in the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, an ancient charitable body concerned with the treatment of skin diseases.
Burtles' first involvement with disaster recovery was in 1974 as a field engineer responsible for repairing and recovering a critical banking system struck by lightning. He went on to become IBM's disaster recovery country specialist before joining a disaster recovery service as their principal emergency management consultant in 1987.
In 2001 he set out on his own as the principal of Total Continuity Management, where he now focuses on executive level training and the development of specialist emergency response skills.
Throughout all these years he tended to specialize in serving the personal needs of those involved in emergency situations. He trained and served as a trauma counselor before developing a counseling technique aimed at helping the victims of disaster-related trauma. This was published in 1998 as A Counselor s Guide to the Restabilization Process. His practical experience includes hands-on recovery work with victims of such violent events as riots, bombings, earthquakes, storms, and fires. This includes technical assistance and support in 90-odd disasters, as well as advice and guidance for clients in over 200 emergency situations.
Through his activities as a trainer and consultant, he has helped to introduce the personal aspects of business continuity, emergency planning, and related disciplines into both the public and private sectors.

Business Continuity Planning at its best!

This book should be a staple in your library if you are responsible for business continuity and DR planning at your company. I was new to the field so I really appreciated how the book was layed out and how easy it was to transfer the information to my plan. There are a lot of applicable practices, tools, cheatsheets, etc that you can easily incorporate into your plan. I was very pleased with this book.

Jim Burtles is one of the business continuity professionals I most admire because of his long-standing commitment to the business continuity industry, and his extensive contributions to the profession over his broad career.

So, as a publisher (and as publisher of this book) I was thrilled when I first saw Jim's manuscript. There are not many people who could have written this book - and far fewer who could have written it nearly as well.

This book is an ideal combination of the practice of business continuity - standards, best practices, global perspective - and, the process of business continuity - planning, development, implementation, and so forth. Jim presents a clear picture of not just how to do what needs to be done, but why. By striking a balance between theory and practice, I believe Jim's approach makes the reader's job much easier and more effective.

There are other books on business continuity - I have edited or published many of them - but Jim Burtles' book is my favorite. With the included CD-ROM containing extensive tools and resources, this book is a no-brainer for anyone who wants to understand business continuity management, is about to embark on implementing a business continuity program, or is looking to bring an existing business continuity program up to world-class best practice.

In this intermittently amusing but excessively long sequel to How to Be Idle: A Loafer's Manifesto, British author and editor (the Idler) Hodgkinson states upfront that his goal is to present a philosophy for everyday life based on freedom, merriment and responsibility, or anarchy. Asserting that before the Reformation, England was one non-stop party, he wants to overthrow modern Puritans and return to an approach to life that is basically having a laugh, doing what you want—and he provides alternatives to the many ills of the modern world such as those listed in the book's title. The main problem is that many of Hodgkinson's topics end up being played for easy laughs—in one chapter titled Forget Government, the message is Stop Voting, while in another on Submit No More to the Machine, Use Your Hands, his main advice is Use a Scythe. When he does try to move beyond laughs and explain how his philosophy can cause a radical redefinition of human relationships based on local needs instead of global capitalism, he never quite explores how this would happen in the real world, relying instead on grand statements (in a chapter called Stop Working, Start Living) such as A spade, a saw and a chisel, that is all you need to be free. Good read for the person who is doing too much and needs to find happiness and be fulfilled

So not a perfect book. I would not follow it word for word, but it is good to help you stop and assess what is going on in your life. It will help find things that are just distractions in this life. This is a very personal decision, and what works for me will not work for you, but this book will help you stop an think about the stuff that gets in the way of life. The authors point in a very small nut shell, there are plenty of things that we initially think we need, but they can take over you life and ultimately can distract you from what you really want to do.

He likes writing manifestos

This book was excellent at first, then it frustrated, then it wavered between those two emotions for the remaining pages. About halfway through he acknowledges how someone could view his ideas as contradictory. For example, he juxtaposes Chapter 17 "In Praise of Melancholy" with Chapter 18 "Stop Moaning; Be Merry." That's fine, but the changes come quickly, and they don't compliment one another as well as they could. Sometimes the chapters feel like they are unfinished or could have gone deeper rather wider in reference across different texts. (The added section at the end titled "Further Reading" gives you a clue about his desire to let you know he's read many books in preparing this book. And yet, he seems to include books he found bland, but spent time looking through. Why do you want someone to do a lot of reading to tell you what's worth a shoulder shrug?)

I thought he was at his best when he was praising the will of the individual to find and create his own happiness, to break free of controls like government or the debilitating pangs of guilt. But then he talks about how people should live in communes and many other pieces of advice that seem to directly restrain the individual. Moreover, it's strange that he rails against external control and advocates freedom, while putting commands at the end of each chapter, like "Start a Guild" or "Cut Up Your Credit Card." When he's telling me things I should do to be free, one of which is "Say yes," the word that kept coming to me was "no."

A lot of his chapters could have been contained inside other chapters. For example, "Chapter 8: Stop Competing" was weak, and the negative sentiments could have gone in "Chapter 4: Reject Career and All Its Promise" and the positive sentiments could have gone in "Stop Working, Start Living," the last chapter on play. Or, they could have all been combined in one extended chapter on the complexities of work. So it comes off as being somewhat sloppy and pandering, even though the book is strongest when it sheds all consideration for what people think. Ironically, if he'd refined his philosophy and made it shorter (or "simpler"), I think it would have been stronger. As it is, the 29 chapters have large doses of filler.

Still, this was a fun book to read and think about and there are good ideas here. You have to find what you like and not get worked up over the abrupt changes in philosophical direction. Take what you like, leave what you don't. But if you needed me to tell you that, I wonder how much help this book could please you.

I loved this book so much I buy it for family and friends as gifts. Its a very easy read with practical tips and advice as well as good humor. I've probably read this book 20 times, its very easy to randomly open it up and start reading.

Elaine has an MBA from Cornell University and worked on projects to build financial management systems for New York City and Washington, D.C. Elaine left her native Chicago for the warmer climes of Arizona (by way of Cincinnati, OH; Jerusalem, Israel; Ithaca, NY; Washington, D.C., and Tampa, FL) where she basks in the sun with her PC and her dog Josh and her cats, Cato, Watson, and Buddy, and sings barbershop harmony with the 2006 International Championship Scottsdale Chorus.

Only book I could find covering Project Sever (EPM)

Over the years Marmel has always delivered a solid product on Microsoft Project. As far as I know, it is the only book on the market right now that has anything related to Project Server. Pretty amazing when you figure Project Server has been out for about 5 months. I see the QUE book on MS Project just came out, and I could be wrong but I didn't see any mention of Project Server in the table of contents. Seems everyone either missed the boat or is pretty late to market on this topic. As I see it, MS Project hasn't changed that much in 10 years so buying a book that doesn't address the enterprise doesn't make a lot of sense unless you are new to Microsoft Project. Great book!

I bought this book mainly for new features in 2007 MS Project. The book is very detailed and serves well for experts and beginners alike. I am quite happy with my purchase. I still have to explore the software provided on the attached CD. One thing it did not come with is 2007 MS project trial software.

Last thought: I wish these came like audio books with flash presentation. They can be in the $200 price range
