About the Author

Junji Ito debuted as a horror manga artist in 1987 with the first story in his successful Tomie series. Uzumaki, drawn from 1998 to 1999, was adapted into a live-action movie, which has been released in America by Viz Films and Tidepoint Pictures. It's influences include the classic manga artists Kazuo Umezu and Hideshi Hino, as well as authors Yasutaka Tsutsui and H.P. Lovecraft.

Silent but deadly...

Gyo is a horror manga put out by the genius that is Junji Ito (Tomie, Uzumaki). It surrounds a young boy & his very picky girlfriend while they are vacationing at the beach. All goes well (aside from some pickiness & whining from his girl) until they discover an unusual creature that has crawled out of the sea. It has the body of a fish, but with strange legs and tubes sticking into it. Little do the young lovers know that this was the beginning of the end for not only the world, but for their love.

I liked Gyo, but it wasn't my favorite of his works. Like one other reviewer put it, you just can't feel as connected to these characters as you have in his other stuff. Still, the story is compelling and the extras in the books are very creepy. It may not be his best, but it's still something to collect.

Freaky, yet... cool

A very good read, even if you're not a horror manga fan. And if you are, then that makes it even better.
If I had to choose any one word to describe this manga by Junji Ito, it'd be "freaky". Not "bizarre", like Uzumaki was. Not "weird", like Flesh Colored Horror was. And not "creepy", like Tomie was. "Freaky". Yes, Gyo is freaky.
Ito manages to show that even fish can be terribly daunting in different situations. Admittedly, the idea of walking fish might raise an eyebrow or two at first -- but as his past work shows, Junji Ito is very capable of making anything and everything frightening... whether they be fish, spirals, or beautiful girls. Here, the fish is drawn with every detail, from its scales to its many fangs. Personally, I find their eyes the most frightening feature of them all -- especially how they remain blank and emotionless as they unleash chaos upon inhabitants of the land. Brrr.
Unlike "Uzumaki" or "Tomie", however, "Gyo" won't hit you with grotesque images every other page, nor does it offer you gallons upon gallons of blood in every chapter. No, "Gyo" prefers to put the focus on the terrifying situations themselves, rather than just the outcomes (those with claustrophobia might feel a bit queasy at the last couple of pages). And while there's virtually no blood at all, there are enough images that will give you a more lasting impression more than a few splatters of blood ever would.
So! If you have a fear of the sea and its many unknown creatures, you might want to sit this one out. Otherwise, sit back, grab a soda, and prepare to hate fish.

The death stench creeps. . .

I'm very glad that Viz decided to reprint this staple of the horror manga genre. Junji Ito is a master of what the Japanese called "guro", and with GYO, you get more psychologically satisfying and nasally unsettling horror.

Tadashi and Kaori are visiting Okinawa island when a mysterious smell - and then a mysterious fish - enters Tadashi's uncle's house. When a fish with synthetic legs is found walking on land the couple runs for the mainland to find answers, and from there things only get more interesting - government plots, gaseous lifeforms and, of course, the rotten stench. GYO is another great work from Ito. It's not as epic as UZUMAKI, but it keeps you turning the pages.

A few quibbles. Kaori's character isn't nearly as fleshed out as I would've liked to have seen. And with every frame of her face involving a widening scream, things seem to drag a bit and my sympathy for her character was lessened. Also, I see no reason to not print GYO in one single volume. At just over 400 pages, it would be very easy to do so, and would eliminate the need to wait until February 2008 to find the second volume (though I have the previous printing's second volume).

That said, this is a great release from Viz. A few bonus stories are included (with VOL 2), with THE ENIGMA OF AMIGARA FAULT being the best. It's one of the best pieces included in any Ito release. Truly frightening.

Almost as frightening as a shark attack -- on land!

Highly recommended.

Me encant�... es una novela corta, se lee r�pido no por lo peque�a sino por lo emocionante y bien escrita. La autora es maravillosa en relatar historias, te es facil imaginar a los personajes as� como las escenas. Te adentras tanto en la �poca del a�o 760 que crees estar ahi... y las escenas er�ticas, son m�s que buenas. No son vulgares, sino con clase. te hacen despertar leves rubores y hasta emociones m�s ardientes!!! muyyyy recomendada!

Una historia bastante original y bastante bonita. Los personajes tienen mucha qu�mica entre ellos y adem�s toca un tema muy interesante. Una novela poco predecible, uno nunca sabe lo que va a pasar. Muy recomendable.

Christopher S. Hyatt, Ph.D., Adv. M.ED. was trained in psycho-physiology and clinical psychology. As a research scientist he has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in professional journals and was a Research Fellow at the University of Toronto and the University of Southern California. He fled the world of academia and state sponsored psychology to become an explorer of the human mind...creating such devices as the Radical Undoing Series. Sometimes interesting, sometimes boring

To Lie is Human was first published back in 1992 (entitled The Tree of Lies), but twelve years later it was published again, this time with its present title. Hyatt has written a great number of books, many with the intention that their readers shall "develop" themselves, that is, put shortly, become the best human he or she can possibly be. Still, Hyatt's works are NOT your ordinary help-yourself books that are flooding the market these days. Yes, it's true, Hyatt offers both advices and lessons through his books, but what separates Hyatt from most others is his unrelenting honesty, his somewhat harsh cynicism that not everybody are able to tolerate, and his ways of again and again attack ideas and values that most people probably have taken for granted all their lives.

But what is it, then, that Hyatt has to say? Well, a whole lot of things, actually. He offers all sorts of advice and help in how the individual can improve to the better, without having to fee responsible for or worry about other people. It's not a hardcore egoistic method - for example, Hyatt never says that the ones close to you don't mean anything - but what is does say is that the large mass of people out there don't really fill any purpose, that most people believing they live free lives are nothing but slaves to something they're not intelligent enough to discover, and that it obviously isn't anything wrong in finding, and using, your own potential to the fullest in a world inhabited by brainwashed citizens.

Still, I find his teachings to be somewhat repetitive. It's very true that Hyatt has tons of interesting things to say, interesting to the extent that they are worth reflecting over and will make you think about things you'd normally not think about, but to tell you the truth, I didn't really find a whole lot of things I hadn't already encountered in The Psychopath's Bible by the same author. The approach in To Lie is Human might be a little different, but when it comes down to it, both books have the same intent; namely to help the reader wake up, see the world for what it really is, and not letting anything stand in the way to personal success.

However, I do have to admit, Hyatt definitely has a sense of humour amidst all his critique, especially when it comes to religions in general and Christianity in particular, which to him is life-denying and attractive only to people too afraid to face life by themselves:

"Have you ever heard of Jehovah having a good belly laugh?

Or, for that matter, his son?

They are miserable creatures and in their misery their flock take refuge."

Now, I don't know about you, but to me that's pretty damn funny.

As for the negative reviews; to each their own. But ask yourself, what could possibly be in this book that could piss someone off that much? and shouldn't you come to your own conclusion?
