Better than average biography
By Hardworking Teacher
As a 6th grade teacher in a multicultural classroom, I am always searching for good multicultural literature for my students. This book is excellent because it covers some African-American leaders about whom we read or hear very little (Richard Allen and Fannie Lou Hamer). The reason I only rate it as better than average is because the biographies discuss only the positive in these peoples' characters and personalities -- never anything negative. My students need to see real people...not superhumans who never make mistakes!

The Ballad of Les Darcy

Recommended to me by my Australian friend, she was correct that the writing style is superior, bringing the character into an intimate relationship with the reader. The usual Kindle E-errors in translation are just a personal annoyance. But that comes with all Kindle translations I have purchased.

Darcy, A story worth retelling!

I knew nothing of Les or his background. Now that I do, I agree with the author that it is an important page in our history that should be made known. Though as is usual for Mr FitzSimons the hero is viewed through Peter's very strong rose coloured glasses. His research is great and is a credit to him. And I like the positive way he presents his main characters i guess I'm just a tad sceptical of such characters being guided by principle alone. On reflection, perhaps it is just that Mr FitzSimons tells the story as the hero would have presented it themselves. So in fact he does get inside the hed of is main characters. And that's not such a bad thing

The book provides a readable and understandable account of the life and times of Les Darcy, probably Australia's greatest boxer, who,like the good son, brother and Australian that he was, wanted to provide for his family before he went off to a war which he was unlikely to return unscathed. Fitzsimmons describes the national state of mind rather well and questions the 'patriotism' which led so many Australians to travel to the other side of the world in order to demonstrate their loyalty to the Empire and claim the national maturity that they believed that had at last won for themselves.

About the Author

Peter Sluglett is Director of the Middle East Institute at the National University of Singapore. A historian of the Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and of the modern states of Iraq, Lebanon and Syria, he has taught Middle Eastern history at the University of Durham, England, and at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. In 2012–13 he was President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America.

Andrew Currie is director of his own independent cartographic consultancy, Creative Viewpoint. A geography graduate of the University of Edinburgh, with a distinction in cartography, he continued post-graduate studies and hands-on application in map-making sciences at the University of Glasgow in the 1960s. He has since worked on a wide range of cartographic productions with several leading publishers of maps and atlases in the U.K. and the Middle East. He considers the Atlas of Islamic History to be his most satisfying and most challenging cartographic design project, since it takes account of all four dimensions - including mapping change through time.

Great Beginners Book!

I got this book because of the great reviews and I wasn't disappointed. I can't believe I'm actually playing the flute! I think it's a great beginners book which moves at the right pace and has a good solid introduction. It took me about 3 weeks to reach the end of the book and play 95% of the pieces most of which are popular so you'll know if you're playing wrong or not.. There are pieces like "Greensleeves" (my fave), "Swan Lake", a lot of classical pieces whose melodies I knew already but not their titles.
I'm now trying to look for a second book to continue with.

The best book I've bought for learning how to play the flute.

I'm learning to play the flute from this book after having taken a few lessons in junior high. What I love about this book is that it doesn't include a lot of unnecessary information. It covers what you immediately need to know to start playing, and adds some pointers on tone later on. Very straightforward. For the money, it's an amazing deal because you get a LOT of songs, from beginner to intermediate, so you won't need to buy another songbook too quickly. I bought another flute book with CD and DVD from Hal Leonard and I haven't used it at all. This book is much better.

The best.

I had always wanted to play the flute since I was forced to play clarinet throughout middle school band. Eventually, I purchased a flute and taught myself to play based on the instruction the flute players got in class. Years later, I decided I wanted to get back into playing music again and needed a refresher course on the flute.

I wish I had this book the first time I wanted to teach myself the flute! The book goes far beyond some simple tips, charts for where to put your fingers for each note, and songs to play. There is in depth advice on how to hold the instrument, how to breathe, how to achieve the best tone, when to use alternate fingerings, and much more! I am so impressed by this book. There are plenty of practice songs too and better songs than I've found in most of these kinds of books. I enjoy listening to myself play them! The best thing about the pieces is that most are designed to teach something (such as a new note, a new key signature, a new time, etc.) and since they are actually nice songs it's much more fun to practice and learn.

Even though I had previous musical experience and could already read music and knew a little about the flute, I think that I could have taught myself using this book. I used to have difficulty hitting higher notes too and this book had really helped me. The quality of my playing, especially my tone, has improved greatly and even though I can play much more advanced pieces now I still come back to this book to review and practice. This book would be a great resource for a new player in a band or music program or taking lessons as well as someone who is self-taught.

All teach yourself to play books should be like this one.

This selection of Orchestra Excerpts was highly recommended by my private teacher. Not only does include an abundance of excerpts, but it also provides a wonderful introduction to some of the most known pieces and composers.

The sheer volume of solo material covered in this book paired with Ms. Baxtresser's commentary on the principle solos contained herein and you have a great book that is well worth the price paid for it!
