The Story of the Moors in Spain (1886) [Illustrated], by Stanley Lane-Poole

The story of the Moors in Spain “reads like a dream.” Under their rule, thrift and prosperity prevailed throughout the country.

“Palatial cities rose under their hand. Aqueducts, rivaling those of the Roman Campagna, brought the streams from the mountains to city and field. Great districts, naturally sunburnt and barren, were made by skilful irrigation to blossom into wonderful fertility. Under their rule Spain was a rich, a prosperous, and, to a great degree, a happy land. Ample revenue of their monarchs enabled them to undertake and complete works of regal splendor, of which the admired Alhambra and the Mosque—now the Cathedral—of Cordova, with its thousand pillars of variegated marble, yet remaining after the desolations of centuries, are striking examples. . . . Their universities were of such celebrity that students from all Christian lands eagerly repaired to them. . . . In poetry and elegant literature, they attained no inconsiderable success.”

This book is very skilful and interesting presentation of that brilliant and adventurous tale. The reader will especially value the numerous excellent illustrations and the ample citation of the story of the Cid. The writer's sympathies are wholly, and perhaps deservedly, with the Moors against the Christians, little or no notice being taken of the vices of slavery and of the harem inseparable from Moslem civilization. "The true memorial of the Moors is seen," he says, " in desolate tracts of utter barrenness, where once the Moslem grew luxuriant vines and olives and yellow ears of corn; in a stupid, ignorant population, where once wit and learning nourished; in the general stagnation and degradation of a people which has hopelessly fallen in the scale of nations, and has deserved its humiliation." So, too, the critic may add, has fallen the once brilliant civilization of Morocco, Algiers, and Tunis.

The book furnishes a fine combination of solid knowledge and literary grace.

Lane-Poole writes:
"THE history of Spain offers us a melancholy contrast. Twelve hundred years ago, Tarik the Moor added the land of the Visigoths to the long catalogue of kingdoms subdued by the Moslems. For nearly eight centuries, under her Mohammedan rulers, Spain set to all Europe a shining example of a civilized and enlightened State. Her fertile provinces, rendered doubly prolific by the industry and engineering skill of her conquerors, bore fruit an hundredfold. Cities innumerable sprang up in the rich valleys of the Guadelquivir and the Guadiana, whose names, and names only, still commemorate the vanished glories of their past. Art, literature, and science prospered, as they then prospered nowhere else in Europe. Students flocked from France and Germany and England to drink from the fountain of learning which flowed only in the cities of the Moors. The surgeons and doctors of Andalusia were in the van of science: women were encouraged to devote themselves to serious study, and the lady doctor was not unknown among the people of Cordova. Mathematics, astronomy and botany, history, philosophy and jurisprudence were to be mastered in Spain, and Spain alone. The practical work of the field, the scientific methods of irrigation, the arts of fortification and shipbuilding, the highest and most elaborate products of the loom, the graver and the hammer, the potter's wheel and the mason's trowel, were brought to perfection by the Spanish Moors."

The truth is........
By I-khan
As a reply to the previous article, I am including this follow-up article to clarify the historical roots of the Moors. Although many Moors practice Islam, as a result of the Islam expansion into Africa, the Moors are not Arabian, as they are often identified (also, all Moors are not Muslims, which we will discuss in an upcoming Board). You can click on the title to go to the actual website. It should also be noted that the black Moors were not slaves but took white people as slaves after their expansion into Spain.

Moors and Arabs

When the Romans entered West Africa in 46 B.C., they saw Africans and called them Maures, from the Greek adjective Mauros, meaning dark or black. It is from Mauros and the Latin term Marues that the word Moor is derived. Since the inhabitants of North Africa were black, the Romans and later the Europeans called them Moors. It is no coincidence that the land inhabited by the Moors was called Mauritania and Morocco, meaning "Land of the Blacks."

In the beginning of the seventh century, the Arab prophet, Muhammad, began to preach the word of Islam. Consumed with religious fervor, the Arabs sought to spread Islam and conquer the world. By 708, the Arabs had overrun North Africa. Consequently, Moors in large numbers accepted Arabic as the national language and converted to their conqueror's religion, Islam. Interestingly, hundreds of years later, Africans who had been enslaved by Europeans would again convert to their conqueror's religion, Christianity.

After the fall of the Roman Empire (fifth century), Spain was held by a barbaric white tribe, the Visigoths. Though they were Christians, their brand of Christianity was cruel and unjust. For this reason, Spain's Jews, serfs, and slaves looked favorably upon the arrival of a new civilization in which they would be able to live free of persecution.

Tarik, a great African chief, was given the rank of general in the Arab army and sent to raid Spain. On April 30, 711, Tarik landed on the Spanish Coast with 7,000 troops. His troops consisted of 300 Arabs and 6,700 native Africans (Moors). An ancient source, Ibn Husayn (ca. 950, recorded that these troops were "Sudanese", an Arabic word for Black people.

The Moors were unstoppable, and Visigothic Spain ceased to be. The few resisting Visigoths fled to the caves of the Cantabrian Mountains. Later in the century, the cave dwellers would venture out of the Cantabrian Mountains and reclaim parts of northern Spain.

The Moors of Africa were the real conquerors. When the Arabs arrived, the hardest part of the job had been done. Instead of treating the Moors fairly, the Arab chiefs assigned themselves the most fertile regions. The dissatisfied Moors were not long in coming to blows with the Arabs. (The History of Spain by Louis Bertrand and Sir Charles Petrie - published by Eyre & Spottiswood, London, 1945, page 36). Ultimately, the Moors acquired two-thirds of the peninsula, which they named Al-Andulus.

Al -Andulus was obliged to pay tribute to the Arab Caliph (King) of Damascus. As Al-Andulus acquired its own identity, its bond with the Caliph began to weaken. In 756, Al-Andulus proclaimed itself an independent state. Thus, its only links to the Arabs would be the Islamic faith and the Arabic language.

The Moorish architectural remains in Cordoba, Seville, and Granada prove conclusively that these cities were more prosperous and artistically more brilliant than any Christian cities in Europe at the time. The Moors of Al-Andulus held the torch of leaning and civilization when the rest of Europe was plunged in barbaric ignorance.

If Moorish Spain had been an accomplishment of the Arabs it would have been called Arab or Arabic Spain. Instead it bears the name of its creators, the Moors, i.e., Moorish Spain. Moorish culture was black in origin, bright in Achievement, and powerful in its influence on the rest of Europe.

A Classic Monumental Work. Historically Significant For the Ages.
By Son of the Seven Seas
A debt of gratitude is certainly in order to the eminent historian Stanley Lane Poole for his voluminous literary contribution to Moorish/Islamic culture and history. Lane Poole was a pioneer whose works in his field not only carried the standard of the era, but were nonpariel in his day.

The Story of the Moors in Spain, written roughly a century ago, is of course, a classic work, and its resurrection today to a rife readership, along with Lane Poole's general body of work and other literary contributions from authors addressing Moorish history, coincides with the contemporary movement of conscious Moors to awaken the general masses to an almost obscured and "forgotten," but relevant history.

Lane Poole renders an outstanding educational retelling of the history of the rise and fall of the Moorish Empire's North African annexed rule in Spain, which is ultimately the account of the beginning of the end of a once powerful people and their empire. I am most pleased and impressed that the book hedges not to identify the Moors in subject, as an African phenotype, although some will insist otherwise. There is much included here for conscious readers to be thankful for; but then there is perhaps much omitted. We must consider that recording the truth about African civilizations and their viable contributions to the world was a daring academic initiative in the 1800's for any author (even before the ascent of anti-Arab prejudice), especially since European academia obsessed with the golden rule of proliferating copious volumes of repugnant canards about Africa in general.

Readers will perhaps shed a tear or two (as I initially did and still do) ingesting Lane Poole's account of the final stand of the Moors; the fall of Granada. From the fierce resistance in the alpajarras, where vivid descriptions of battle read like Tolkien; to the gallant charge and final battle of Musa, who deserves much more ink in any historian's account of this time period; to the disgrace of King Boabdil as he relinquishes the throne he hastened to obtain through viciously selfish motives, and foolishly squandered through cowardice and ignorance; and finally, to the sad exile of the Moors, "You may weep like a woman for what you could not defend as a man."

So, this work certainly earns its place in the firmament of Moorish history literature (a sky which, unfortunately, doesn't necessarily teem with stars), and students of history will find it a great read and perfect Moorish History consultation. It is a monumental work for the ages, beautiful in that while holding a firm position on the tapestry of scholarly and academic merit, Lane Poole writes in a style that even children can comprehend and appreciate. An overall great and wonderful read.

And while it is unlikely that lane Poole could have predicted his work would one day find profound appreciation with a reading constituency that didn't exist as such when he wrote, he must be pleased today, for his contribution extends well beyond his grave.

The best 'popular' history of Muslim Spain
By Gogol
This book initially grew in popularity over a decade ago through Ivan Van Sertimas book on the Moors in which this book was well quoted. Stanley Lane Poole was one of those unique writers who could write an accurate historical book in a style that was easy to read. This book covers the hstory of Andalusia or Muslim Spain from the initial conquest to the downfall of Granada and the expulsion of the Muslims from their homeland.

Its almost comical these days that a book like this would be considered 'politically corretc' Thing is, it was published over a century ago in an age much less tolerant than our own when Britain and the was in conflict with a declining Ottoman Turkey and almost at the peak of European colonialism. Yet still, we could find scholars of this quality.

Highly recomended.

This is the first book in the series that I read, but I'm pausing only long enough to write this review before I go hunt up the others. I love sci-fi. I love romance. I love history. There isn't anything in this for me not to love.

Book 3 of trilogy
By Moon Cat
This book takes a swerve in the Pavlovian trio when a couple of earthly Viking brothers defrost after 4000 years. A female Pavlovian scientist ends up bonded to the Older brother while the organization she works for goes ballistic. Delightfully Senator Ash reappears linking the three books together. A very interesting aside is the last name of the brothers, Bloodaxe. This is also the name of the Viking Royal family on the planet Valhalla in the series Planet Mail by Kate Pearce. Perhaps the two series will intertwine??? Anyway it looks like there will be another book for the younger Viking brother so this is no longer a trilogy. Very sexy scenes, definitely over 18.

good overview, but a bit out of date
By saabista
I've very much enjoyed the book, it offers a great overview of ancient Egypt's civilization (these kind of books are hard to find nowadays because I guess people specialize in only one pharaoh or one period...).

But obviously the book is a bit out of date being 100 years old (e.g. various strange remarks, Tutankhamun's tomb wasn't discovered yet when the book was published, so there's no mention of him, the scientists now know why Hatshepsut died and this book is offering some speculations we now know weren't correct...).

But overall it's a great read if you want to know more about ancient Egyptians. I read it before going on vacation in Egypt and it really helped me understand better the monuments I saw there.

Biblical Analysis of Revival
By Seeking Disciple
In our day and age I hear believers crying out for revival. Often we hear of the revivals of Charles Finney and D.L. Moody but do the theology of revivals is often ignored or not discerned.
Iain Murray has written this book to look at the later half of the 19th century and the beginnings of the 20th century concerning revival. Much of the modern cry for revival comes from this time period and yet sadly so does much of the theology. Charles Finney, as you will read, is the father of modern pragmatic theology and his followers such as Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, and other church growth "experts" fall into his theology and life. "If it works, if it brings results then do it" would be Finney's motto. And that is where the modern evangelical church is today. Ignore sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:16; Titus 2:1) and give them what they want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3,4).
This should be required reading for all pastors and teachers of God's Word and may God send us a genuine revival that is full of His Word and His glory and not the traditions and teachings of men (Mark 7:1-13).

Reformed Preachers: Tolle Lege, Tolle Lege
By K. Darrell
Do you ever wonder where the power in the pulpit is? Have you read about the Great Awakening and the preaching of Whitefield, Wesley, Edwards, and many others and think, Where is that today? Why is it missing? This book, I believe, can help you discover why.

In one sense, the answer is disappointing. Murray, writing as a Calvinist, is convinced that there is nothing that you can do to create this, and, as a Calvinist, I absolutely agree. In another sense, however, Murray says we have every Biblical reason to petition the Lord, "work for it", and expect him to answer our prayers to fill us with the Spirit, so awakening, revival, and true power from the pulpit will be manifested.

The first chapter, which outlines the three traditional views of revival--"once and for all", "conditional", "old school--is essential reading. In short the different schools say three different things. The first says, the filling of the Spirit occured at Pentecost and we should not expect more today. It was a once and for all thing. The second view, conditional, says we must meet certain requirments ('clean hands & a pure heart'), then the Lord will send revival. The third view, which Murray promotes and I agree with, says that it is some sort of mixture of the two. Jesus Christ sits at the right hand of God the Father and "increases" experience and "increases" the "fulness" of the Holy Spirit. This view, I believe, is the most Biblical because in considers the work of Christ and the Holy Spirit from the Cross to Pentecost, recognizing the fulness of what God has done there, but recognizes that there is always an increase to be had in any relationship. The first view, I believe, minimizes this relational aspect, just as the second minimizes the legal or definitive aspect of the Lord's work.

The chapter on "Preaching and the Holy Spirit" is another must read. We need Reformed preachers that are filled with the Holy Spirit and love, and this chapter will provide plenty of historical precedent for "Calvinists" to be "filled with the Spirit" and completely loving towards their neighbors and in their sermons. God isn't grouchy, looking to strike us down.

Much more could be said, but in a brief Amazon review, I hope that whets your appetite to purchase this book.

Why we do not have revival today...
By Jerry Teets
A wonderful compliment to his other book "Revival and Revivalism: The Making and Marring of American Evangelicalism." Brother Murray covers what is meant and understood about Revival through three views; Once for All, Conditional, and Old School. Then he expands and explains the effect each view has on what is understood about Revival and the work of the Holy Spirit during such times of special outpouring. But the chapter I enjoyed the most was Chapter 6, Hindering Revival: Evangelical Fanaticism. Many of the problems in Evangelicalism stems from Fanaticism...trying to work up a Holy Spirit revival. God does His work by His Spirit in His time and in His own way. We can hinder God's work and stop a revival when we give a greater place to experience than to curb our emotions and submit to God and His word.

Dutch Painting, 1600-1800 (The Yale University Press Pelican History of Art Series), by Seymour Slive

Dutch painting in its prime is one of the great achievements in the history of art. Painters described their life and their environment, their country and their city sights so thoroughly that their work seems to provide a nearly complete pictorial record of Dutch culture. This book explores all the aspects of a truly creative period when sureness of instinct and quality of performance held a safe balance. The work of the great masters - including Rembrandt, Hals, Vermeer, Ruisdael - and their impact on others are analyzed and set in the context of a period when government, religion and social structures were all reestablishing themselves after significant changes. Slive discusses the kinds of painting that became Dutch specialities: genre scenes, landscape, marines and still lifes, portraiture and architectural painting, as well as examining patronage, trends in art theory and criticism, and collecting.

very general, main text a let down
By aindriu
As a general reader with a computer science background I can only give my personal review. I got the book today, it arrived from the states to Ireland slightly dog eared. I am a bit annoyed that Amazon could not do better with the packaging. As for the book its quite a big book with lots of pictures in colour and black and white. However after going through the main text for several hours I think the person who gave 5 stars to this book got it completely wrong. The text is quite general and although it covers a vast range of artists and genres, the text is not particularly thought provoking and I cant see how any reader will read all 327 pages. The book seems expensive and its generally aimed as a college course. I'm a bit disappointed and seriously could not recommend the book unless you want to flick through an expensive book looking at pictures. I would have to go with the 3 star ranking based on the number of paintings covered
