AMAZING book

This book does go significantly into more detail than is in the First Aid or Goljan, but I think it's EXACTLY what I needed because renal is a subject that needs a lot of explanations.

EXCELLENT book, I would think it's pretty close to a "Lily Pathophysiology of the Heart" for renal pathophys. and when I make that comparison, if you haven't read the Lily pathophys book, you're also seriously missing out.

For example, from the glomerular disease section, there was a great explanation on the significance of immune complex deposits. In classic Nephritic Syndromes ICs deposit characteristically subendothelially or mesangially and b/c of this close location to systemic circulation they are able to attract WBCs when they activate complement and induce inflammation, as opposed to classic nephrotic syndrome where the IC is deposited subepithelially, which is unable to contact WBC in systemic circulation.

Anyways, you get the idea. GET THIS BOOK if you want to learn renal!!!!

good at first glance

I'm a little surprised at the rave reviews and I wonder if they were written before the book was read in detail--to be clear, I thought this book was excellent as I was first reading it, as well. I thought Lily's Pathophysiology of Heart Disease was excellent, and I thought this book would be similar in that it would provide detailed explanations with clues about mechanisms. Although I think this book attempts to explain mechanisms, at least for someone with a cursory knowledge of renal pathophysiology, I found them confusing and inconsistent with what I've read elsewhere.

For example, one of the other reviewers states that this book attempts to differentiate the clinical manifestations of nephrotic versus nephritic syndrome on the basis of sub-epithelial versus sub-endothelial deposits. The authors claim that one of the reasons why diseases that cause sub-epithelial deposits manifest as nephrotic syndrome is because circulating inflammatory cells are not able to access the sub-epithelial space and thus there is no inflammation. Similarly, the book posits that diseases with sub-endothelial deposits tend to manifest as nephritic, because the circulating inflammatory cells are able to access the deposited antigen/antibody/complement.

But this does not really explain why post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, which is classified in First Aid, Robbins, and Goljan as primarily nephritic, has sub-epithelial deposits (in which case, according to this theory, you would expect a primarily nephrotic presentation). In addition, it does not explain why membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, which has sub-endothelial deposits, tends to present as a nephrotic syndrome.

I encountered other parts of the book in which I noticed a similar phenomena: I found the explanations to sort of make sense, but they were at odds with what I'd read from many other sources. I think this book may be helpful for persons with a background in renal pathophysiology who are interested in attempting to understand the mechanistic basis of renal disease, but it can be confusing and contradictory for students (and others) who are learning the basics.

I think this book would more aptly be named Renal Pathophysiology: The Extras.

Good, not great.

Good book for everything besides nephrotic & nephritic syndromes. Its discussion on hypo/hyper-natremias, hypo/hyper-kalemias, and other renal states were great & helpful. However, the chapters dealing with the myriad etiologies of nephrotic & nephritic syndromes were not well organized, though the detail was all there.

Horrid book

If you're going to be using this book on MyMathLab/MathXL then take my advice - don't waste any more money to buy the book. The entirety of the book is available as an ebook included with your subscription code.

This book is a heavy, huge waste of space. There is little to be learned from the book, as it is essentially a massive topic outline with an occasional example and copious self-assessment type questions. The questions which appear at the end of every section are page fillers - most of the work you do on an online class will render all those questions dead space. The online "View an Example" button is (in the absence of a good teacher/tutor) the only thing that teaches you how to do a problem, which shows you step by step (most of the time) how to solve that type of problem. Occasionally, you'll be quizzed on something that is not explained in the book - or explained in such a high level that no solution can be derived that will help you in practice. The answers to all the hundreds of pages of questions are not explained, only given. This leads me to believe that those working purely from the book without an online component are just as, if not worse off, than the online folks.

Students will have little choice in the selection of this book - it is my hope that teachers will see these reviews and choose a more helpful book. If all you care about as a teacher is hitting topic points, this book will make that painfully clear, but it will do your students no service as a learning tool. At the very least, make the book optional where online access applies.

Lastly, if you are considering the loose leaf book, stop considering. The book is useless enough as it is, but the ultimate price of saving the few bucks in binding is that loose leaf has literally no resale value. This will make you likely ineligible for book buyback and selling online is risky since nobody knows what pages may or may not be missing or what condition they're in after not having a binding. If you simply must have this book, look to a bound or electronic rental where applicable. This is one of those cases where nearly any price of rental below selling price will be a worthwhile transaction.

A great reference

I wish some of the examples were a little clearer in this book, but let's face it. You HAVE to buy this book for your math class. I think it's a good book because of it's breadth. Many topics are covered so I imagine it will be quite useful to look back over during my next few semesters in calculus.

About the Author
Maurine St. Gaudens, a historian, scholar, and proponent of the arts, has dedicated herself to the pursuit and recognition of artists. She is a fine arts conservator and has curated numerous exhibitions.

Fascinating reading......

These books are stunning....with broad appeal to art lovers, collectors. curators and libraries. Maurine St. Gaudens has achieved a new milestone in women’s art research with these four volumes. The vast number of images includes photographs of the artists and their work, signatures and personal ephemera. Their stories are fascinating and leave you wanting more. The details add to the essence of the tales; the inclusion of holiday cards sent by the artists enhances the reality of their life and times. You can open to any page and become immediately engulfed in an artist’s life:

There are the Bruton sisters: Esther, Helen and Margaret, each following her own path, but with a strong familial artistic streak. They shared a studio in California, studied together in New York and Paris, and traveled throughout the Southwest. In 1939 the sisters received a joint commission for Peacemakers, an 144 x 57 ft. mural for the Golden Gate International Exposition. They eventually moved to northern California and set up their respective studios where they worked for the remainder of their lives.

Ruth Asawa survived the prejudices of being of Japanese descent in World War II, being interned in a camp in Arkansas and the hostility after the war which prevented her from obtaining the college degree she was entitled to in Milwaukee. It was arranged for her to attend Black Mountain College in North Carolina where her instructors included Josef Albers, Merce Cunningham and Buckminster Fuller. This environment gave her the confidence to pursue a career as as artist. Ruth and her husband Albert Lanier moved to San Francisco and raised six children. Her work is on exhibit in the new Whitney Museum in New York.

Lucretia Le Bourgeois Van Horn had a life that lends itself to a full length film. Born into wealth and privilege her childhood was devastated by tragedies. She went to France after art study in New York and became the first woman to win their highest prize in 1904. Returning to the states she met Douglas MacArthur, then an aide to President Theodore Roosevelt. She resisted his proposals and later married another military aide to the President. In the 1920s she met Diego Rivera who had a significant impact on her work. Her work evolved through the turmoil of her life.

The evolution of Emerging from the Shadows began with the author’s recognition of the obscurity of most of these women of talent. This compelling story of how they continued their passion for their work throughout their lives through education, marriages, motherhood, travels, and careers. The diversity of the works shown extends its appeal to readers, collectors, and researchers.

Although the author includes some artists of recognition such as E. Charlton Fortune, Agnes Pelton, and Mabel Alvarez, her persistence in following the more unrecognized women sheds new light on these creative artists. (I personally hope this will open a portal to some further research on some of these women. Some are so intriguing they would warrant a book.)

In Volume IV there is the mystery of Paula Zen. St. Gaudens admits to her quest to find out more information in the future. The mystery is contagious......I want to know more.

Every library needs these books and these volumes would make an exceptional gift for the art lover in your life.

More Foul and Filthy and Pedophilia Bashing

I'm as liberal and open minded as the next immature, foul-mouthed cretin, but I had to put this slim volume down every twenty minutes and take a shower.
This is some foul, filthy stuff that is right up the Aristocrats alley.
Extremely funny, but not for the weak-hearted or religious crowd.
But with Stanhope, I guess you know what your getting.

Doug Stanhope is my favorite comedian and this is him at his best. He takes to catch a predator to a whole new funny level. Its a quick read but well worth it since i laughed through the entire book, and cried from laughing so hard through the whole book as well.

The SuperHero of Trickery

This book is a twisted version of Dateline: To Catch a Predator. They work with a group called Perverted Justice, an organization dedicated to identifying adults on the internet willing to have chat room sexual encounters with minors. Doug Stanhope is Perverted Justice in real time. He's like an auxiliary police officer on permanent leave determined to root out this evil in the most hilarious way. We all know those cop shows where the cop is tired of the rules and he gets fired from the force and although he's off duty he still tracks down the criminal? This is Fun with Pedophiles: The Best of Baiting. Doug Stanhope hunts them down with a mouse and keyboard and drills everything into their head that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Let's face it if Dateline can find a pedophile that easy so can Doug Stanhope. Fun with Pedophiles is a masterful collection of real world transcripts from the superhero of trickery. I got the feeling that every pederast Doug chatted with was left in such a state of confusion they crawled into a corner and began babbling incoherent word syllables until they were unable to feed themselves. This book is raw comedic genius. It's reality TV in book form with gut splitting laughter, ironic justice and of course the psychotic humor of Doug Stanhope.
