A PDF stamp is a bit like an old style rubber stamp, in that it is one of the primary ways to add extra (custom) information to a document as it moves through a process (i.e., a document workflow). Like a rubber stamp, a PDF stamp is a custom graphic, but a PDF stamp is much more than a rubber ink stamp could ever be. A PDF stamp is like an old-style rubber ink stamp on super steroids. Not regular steroids, but super steroids. Because, a PDF is an electronic document, so a PDF stamp is about as close to a rubber ink stamp as the map Columbus used to cross the Atlantic is to a GPS. Your rubber ink stamp doesn’t automatically acquire data from the document and then send it to a database. A PDF stamp assisted workflow can do that because a PDF stamp can contain active code that dynamically modifies the stamp graphic, accesses the document being stamped, and communicates with other scripts. Of course, a PDF stamp can also be just like a rubber ink stamp if it needs to be. Hence, anytime there is a need to “stamp” something onto a PDF document, it is the PDF stamp that comes to the rescue.

Stamps have been a part of Acrobat and PDF for a long time. As you might imagine, they are a popular feature of PDF, so stamp creation and workflows have developed into their own specialties. To explain what they are and how they are used the book is divided into three parts, where each part delves progressively deeper into the details of PDF stamps and how they are used in paperless workflows in the Acrobat environment.

Part I provides a general “how and why” discussion on PDF stamps. The first chapter explains everything there is to know about PDF stamps qualitatively. It is an outline of all the material in the book. Chapter 2 explains the role of PDF stamps within a paperless workflow and presents several examples (in a variety of industries) where PDF stamps solve real world document processing issues. Part II eases into the technical details of PDF stamps. It begins with material appropriate for the novice and non-technical user, such as the menus and tools in Acrobat for working with stamps. It then progresses into increasingly advanced topics: creating custom stamps, the internal details of the stamp file, and protecting stamps from unauthorized usage. This part of the book is for anyone who needs to know how you actually use and manage custom stamps. It includes some expert tidbits and JavaScript examples for more advanced readers, but you do not need to know anything about programming to understand the topics.

Part III is for programmers. It covers the two areas of the Acrobat scripting model that involve stamps: dynamic stamp scripts and workflow automation. The ability to alter the stamp appearance dynamically and use stamps within an Acrobat automation script provides two very powerful tools for processing documents. Nevertheless, even non-programmers will find a great deal of valuable and usable information in this portion of the book. While Part III contains some deep and complex material, all the concepts are accessible to the novice, and there are scripting examples that anyone can use.

Book will leave you wanting more....

I agree with one of the other reviewers that the book talks a lot about the history and general usage (work flows) of PDF stamps, but does little to actually teach you how to make (program) custom dynamic stamps with more than a single text box for user input. If you are looking to create advanced PDF stamps that have multiple types of user inputs (radio buttons, drop-down lists, multi-input dialog boxes, etc.) look elsewhere. I spent 2 solid days trying to create a stamp that had a drop-down list for user input that would then set the state of radio buttons on the stamp to no avail. I read this book over and over, along with using the java-script code samples in the back of the book, but could never get it fully working. I would even use his code verbatim and it still would not work. Frustrating!! I am not a java-script programmer but have programmed in several other languages.

I found another PDF java-script programming guide on the web, for free mind you, and within 30 minutes I had my stamp fully working. What a complete waste of my time trying to use this book as a resource for programming advanced PDF stamps.

I should give it 1 star, but for those who know nothing about PDF stamps this book should give you a little bit of value in the general overview of PDF stamps and what you can do with them. You might even be able to make a dynamic date and signature stamp if you are lucky.

Excellent Guide

I found the book to be a great resource. I am confused as to what another reviewer stated in reference to the book not having specific instructions. The book is very clear and concise. It has screenshots for each step of the process and could even be considered too basic for intermediate/advanced users. It really holds your hand from start to finish in most of the beginning chapters. I would recommend this book for beginners, intermediate users and advanced Adobe scripters who want to save money with electronic workflows. It is not a theoretical exercise in PDF philosophy, but a practical and complete "How-to" guide. You can put the book beside your computer and follow along step-by-step. If you are responsible for implementing workflows at your business/company it is an essential "must have" reference. This book will pay for itself in the cost savings after the first case of paper. And that won't take very long.

Great and challenging stuff

I've used Thom Parker's methods in the past and just ran into his video (Stamps Gone Wild) and then this book in the last week.

I wasn't until a couple of years after I designed my first dynamic stamp that I found WindJack's instructions online for creating multi fill-in field stamps. Having this kind of Acrobat changed the way our department approved and coded invoices. They select codes from an Access database where the invoice pdfs are linked (no more code typos), click a button to open the pdf and put the selected code into the clipboard, and then apply the code into the dynamic stamp by pasting. They'll never go back to the old way.

Now to learn that a single stamp can also have dynamic signatures and that the signatures can be protected for use only by the actual signer is really exciting. I love knowing this is possible. I"ll get there.

I'm not yet through the book, but I can pretty much promise anyone that this book or a consult with Thom Parker are just about the only place you'll find this information. I would never have gotten to where I am with Acrobat dynamic stamp design without Thom Parker's expertise and sharing.

A great story but not Star Force

I just read this post and the Star Force facebook page. It is a direct quote by Aer-ki Jyr. I just thought that it should be included on this page.

"Ok, a point of clarification...
Apex is NOT part of the Star Force universe.
They both use similar technology...jumpships, lachars, plasma cannons, telepathy, etc, but the stories are not connected. I wrote Apex before I wrote Star Force, couldn't get it published the conventional route, then discovered Amazon's independent publishing. I thought it was probably had a catch, so I didn't want to risk Apex on it so I wrote an old story I had been kicking around and that became SF1.
Well, there was no catch, Amazon is great, and I went on writing it and put Apex on the shelf. Then over a year later I realized I might as well publish it, so I did.
I admit, from your point of view, they really look and feel like they're the same thing, right down to the Cres being genetic hybrids of Human and Elarioni. Seriously, I didn't plan that. Just happened. But what you don't know is what lies ahead in Star Force that will make it incompatible with Apex. I do, so for me I don't think they're the same.
Some of the reviews on Apex say they're the same, so I wanted to point out that they're not. Would be kind of cool if they were, but it would also be massive spoilers, and I don't write like that. I like to keep you guys guessing.
So I hope that clears that up."

Great ride

I was sceptical, but soon converted. This was every bit as good as Star Force. It seems Aer-ki Jyr writes exactly the type of stories I like to read. Space opera setting, a plot with vision, strong characters, attention to technology and physical evolution. Apex did not disapoint, and delivered on every aspects. A great ride.

I enjoy the series the author writes but this latest book showcases the writers skills in a way the series does not. It is faster paced, harder hitting and one of the best stories I've read this year.

An Excellent Biography of an American Woman

Emma Goldman: American Individualist is a full account of the life of one of America's most notorious anarchists. The author, John Chalberg, takes the reader from her life as a poor, abused, and repressed youngster in Russia to the United States where the blood of the workingman gives her a purpose. But, not only does Chalberg concern the reader with Emma Goldman and anarchism, he also gives a nice account of other radicals of the time, such as socialism and communism and their most noted leaders. Thus, this book provides an excellent source of American history and politics as it is coming into the age of industry. Furthermore, Chalberg presents Emma Goldman, not as an evil, unruly, unamerican anarchist, but as a dedicated, motherly, sympatheic woman simply dedicated to helping the struggling American. Emma Goldman: American Individualist is insightful, well organized, and well executed.

A liberal's treatment

This is a liberal handling of one of the most vociferous anarchists of the early twentieth centuries; it's a decent biography but he seems to be reducing her anarchism to an extreme expression of American individualism. There is some discussion on her thought and influences, and some of it is quite possibly speculation... somehow the author doesn't mention Nietzsche's influence on her at all, but Thomas Jefferson, a slave-owning man who served in the US government and wrote some idealistic things figures as a definite influence on her. Living My Life or something by Paul Avrich are better choices.

About the Author
David Kinsella is Professor and Chair of Political Science, and Director of the Public Affairs and Policy Ph.D. program in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of International Studies Perspectives and has held faculty positions at American University and the University of Missouri. His primary areas of research are the global arms trade, regional conflict, democratic peace, and just war theory.

Bruce Russett is Dean Acheson Professor of International Relations and Director of United Nations Studies at Yale University. Since 1972, he has edited the JOURNAL OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION and has been president of the International Studies Association and the Peace Science Society (International). He also has taught at Columbia University, MIT, and the Free University of Brussels and was Visiting Professor of International Capital Markets Law at the University of Tokyo. He has held research appointments at the University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, The Richardson Institute in London, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, and the University of Tel Aviv.

Harvey Starr is the Dag Hammarskjold Professor in International Affairs and Chair of the Department of Government and International Studies at the University of South Carolina. He is the former president of the Conflict Processes Section of the American Political Science Association, the APSA vice president, and the president of the Peace Science Society. He served as editor of INTERNATIONAL INTERACTIONS and associate editor of the JOURNAL OF POLITICS. He also has taught at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and the Australian National University.

Great Foundational Textbook

I found this to be a great foundational textbook—clearly laid out and easy to follow, it takes you through the basic layout of political science theory as relates to world politics. I found the case studies appropriate and well explained. The "menu" analogy is not always easy to sustain, but as an introductory text I think it works very well to help conceptualize various theories.

I purchased the kindle edition, by the way.

I would give 5 stars but the smell was horrible. I had to wash it before wearing because it smells liked mildew (very strong) right out of the bag. The shirt fits very nicely though and feels as it will keep me warm during winter months. I want to order more but hesitate because of the strong mildew odor. The company needs to work on that. Otherwise, a perfect fit and nice shirt.

Package is not well sealed, has page damage

This is the first time that I want to write a review for the textbook that I purchased on Amazon. Compared to other used book price, I decided to purchase a new condition from the Amazon. When I get the package, I found the package has not been completed unsealed at the bottom side. Then I opened the book and found that at least one page has small part missing and dark spots. Cover shows degree of wear. I won't be that confident any more to believe the textbook condition from Amazon.com.

Dr Colbert covers so much material that I can say that's what I love and that's what I do not like about this book. He answers many more questions than I knew I had. He addresses inflammation from the weight loss point of view. I purchased the book because I realize I have debilitating inflammation. Well, to reverse this condition, I will have to purchase a number of supplements. None of them are recommended in the compound form. I will be spending a lot of money to get myself out of this. But, I will have a great detailed guide. Thank you Dr Colbert.
