About the Author
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Jacqueline D. Byrd (Jackie) has been a partner with her husband Toby in the firm of BYRD & BYRD, LLC since 1999, focusing her practice on issues of Elder Law- including estate planning, wills and trusts, powers of attorney, special needs trusts, Medicaid eligibility, and asset preservation. In December, 2004, Jackie was recognized by her peers, with her selection in Washingtonian magazine’s list of 280 “Top Washington Attorneys.” Jackie is currently the Recording Secretary of the Maryland/D.C. chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and in 2003 won the NAELA Award for Outstanding Chapter Member. She is a founding Co-Chair of the Elder Law Section of the Prince George’s County Bar Association and a member of the Governing Council of the Elder Law Section of the Maryland State Bar Association. In June of 2004, she received the “President’s Award” from the Prince George’s County Bar Association for outstanding contributions to the Bar and to the community. Jackie graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law. As a UB alumna, Jackie received a Dean's Citation as Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Administration newsletter, "The Official Reporter." While in law school, she was a Teaching Assistant in the Legal Analysis, Research and Writing program. Before entering law school in 1995, Jackie capped a twenty-five year career on Capitol Hill as Assistant to the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives. In 1994, she was chosen for and completed the prestigious Senior Managers in Government Program at Harvard. Her undergraduate work was done at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas where she received a BA in Speech and Drama, and earned membership in the honorary forensic fraternity, Phi Kappa Delta. Jackie writes a weekly “Senior Moments” column for The Bowie Blade-News and the Crofton Crier newspapers. In July 2005, the first 150 columns were compiled and published in a book, Senior Moments: A book for seniors and those who love them. Jackie is a proud grandmother who delights in spending every possible moment with triplets Toby, Jack and Anna, and little brother Timothy. Jackie also takes pleasure in reading, playing piano, watching movies and traveling with her husband Toby.

An Elder Law Attorney and Columnist's Advice to Seniors and their Caregivers

"Senior Moments," subtitled "A book for seniors and those who love them," by Jacqueline D. Byrd (Byrd & Byrd, 2005), is based on the author's weekly "Senior Moments" column, originally written for two Maryland newspapers. Mrs. Byrd is more Baby Boomer than Senior Citizen, but as an attorney specializing in Elder Law, she is eminently qualified to advise seniors and caregivers on various issues such as estate planning, health care, senior housing, and other challenges ranging from how to tell when it's time to stop driving, how to avoid scams and frauds, and how to recognize and deal with elder abuse to how to remain active and stay happy into old age.

This book is full of valuable information; the author cites and quotes various experts on aging and legal issues, and includes a detailed table of contents that makes finding specific topics and resources easy.

The final chapter is more personal as Byrd discusses her own "extraordinary" mother and grandchildren and her coming sixtieth birthday. There, she contemplates "the realities and the mystery and blessing of growing older."

There are many opportunities for seniors, but, writes Jackie Byrd, some seniors won't consider volunteering at a senior center, moving to assisted living when it's needed, or joining senior activity groups because "old people are there.. . . So, unneeded, they waste away, full of sadness and regret, feeling misunderstood and unloved." Anyone who reads Byrd's book carefully and heeds her advice can avoid such a fate.

Too scattered - too many solutions

I was desperate. My doctor put me on flonase and recommended this book. I would say Dr Ivker is probably better in person but it frustrated me. He has some charts but how many things are on that chart!??!??!

If you follow this chart you are either guessing which items he is recommending and hoping the amounts add up, (for example I assume most of them equal WellNess Formula and a few additions) or get them individually and spend the entire bank account.

So I did learn a few things from him but basically what I learned was neti pots (which my D.O. already had me on) and take a ton of vitamins and herbs... It did not successfully help me find ONE solution.

I ended up looking on his new store and the herb combinations he recommends end up the same - i have tried the nasal spray - not helpful for me, the rest dont match his charts really at all. I was sad. i really wanted a solution to my allergic rhinitis and constant sinus infections.

I have found other things - and yes, basic advise like rest and facing stress are totally helpful but not new.

Awesome Book!!!

My husband purchased this book following a recent discouraging visit with an ENT regarding his sinus infections. The ENT wanted him to take antibiotics and steroids and then come back in a month to his office to see if he could scope things out. Over the past 30 years, my husband has had two nasal surgeries, has used Flonase or other nasal sprays off and on and has been on multiple courses of antibiotics for sinus infections without any lasting results. Rather than throwing any more money down the drain using conventional medicine, my husband did his research and stumbled onto this AWESOME book. Wow, what a wealth of information! Even though the 4th edition of this book is 14 years old, it really opened his eyes to holistic treatments that are actually working to FINALLY give him some relief from his sinusitis.

WHAT A GEM!

I'm SOOO thankful for the recommendations in this book. I had a sinus infection for almost 2 years! Not the kind that comes and goes, but a chronic infection that wouldn't go away no matter what I did. I had taken 6 courses of antibiotics (my poor gut!) given my by primary care doctor and my ENT. I had also tried a bunch of different supplements - none of which could get rid of the infection. Next step was going to be surgery. I'm so glad I decided to hold off on surgery to try alternative treatments. After following the suggestions in this book (especially steaming followed immediately by nasal irrigation), my post nasal drip is gone. No more yellow mucus running down the back of my throat that I had to cough out. I'm still continuing the treatment to make sure it's really gone gone, but so far I'm very happy to see a HUGE improvement in my sinus problem. Thank you so much!

Good book, lots of action but with a somewhat dark ending.

This is the fourth and, apparently, last book in the Bookworm series by Christopher Nuttall. It is a good book with plenty of action and the writing is as good as always from this author. The book is a wee bit on the dark side though including the ending which, although it concludes the story and deals with the main bad guy, does leave the world in quite a bit of turmoil.

In the book we get to follow Elaine in her final journey to stop the Witch-King. Needless to say it is a perilous one which includes a number of assassination attempts while the Witch-King’s pawn ravages the countryside as well as a full scale siege with dragons an all. The odds against Elaine seems quite insurmountable.

It is an enjoyable adventure indeed. As I wrote above, Mr. Nuttall’s writing is the usual one, that is good. There is plenty of good action. I Especially liked the siege of Ida where Elaine and company finally get to fight back and fight back effectively much to Deferens surprise.

The book ends with a rather spectacular showdown against the Witch-King in the Golden city. Unfortunately it tears much of the city and the old institutions apart. What remains after the dust has settled is pretty much a world in shambles where much of the old ways are gone forever. These kind of endings always saddens me a bit even though the bad guy got a whooping.

Nevertheless it was a enjoyable read and a good ending to the series.

A solid effort from Nuttall. Not his best, but certainly not his worst. NIce to see a series completed. I'm guessing he wants to concentrate more on the other series which is similar, but more popular.

I really loved this whole series. Old historic concepts of cultural clashes, war, societal power plays and revolutionary plots made fresh with the addition of magic and a sleeping threat soon to awaken. Interesting characters and a plot that moved swiftly. What happens when you have a society where worth is based on magical ability that is suddenly threatened with its possible removal or living beneath the food of an all powerful and slightly mad dictator....and time is running out.
Some sex, handled discreetly. Some violence- but still would say this would appeal to teens and young adult- up.
