"Fantastic Read!" -�Amazon.com ReviewThis is a short, but extremely enjoyable read in my opinion. It is essentially a dialogue the protagonist is having with himself, as he writes what came off as a self-help essay. I agreed with much the protagonist had to say, and his dreams reflected my own, which may explain why I liked this story so much.
My favorite thing about it though is the dialogue throughout the book. It is a unique way to help guide the reader, and it kept me engaged. On top of that, it was downright hilarious at times. The explanation of the difference between tough luck and bad luck had me in stitches.

Fantastic read!

This is a short, but extremely enjoyable read in my opinion. It is essentially a dialogue the protagonist is having with himself, as he writes what came off as a self-help essay. I agreed with much the protagonist had to say, and his dreams reflected my own, which may explain why I liked this story so much.

Who would have thought a book could be so useful AND fun to read?

First let me say that I read several technical books a month, and have reviewed them for Manning Publications on several occasions. So I have some pretty high standards that must be met before I give a book five stars.
I am teaching myself PowerPivot for work, and have Microsoft® PowerPivot for Excel® 2010: Give Your Data Meaning which is very thorough, but this book is more helpful. It focuses most on what I know least about--Data Analysis eXpressions, or DAX. It begins with the assumption that the reader is an Excel power user, or "Excel Pro" as the author calls us. It therefore gets right into the material related to PowerPivot, without wasting time or space on things everyone who uses Excel professionally already knows.
The author's writing style is entertaining, turning what could be a very dry topic into something you want to celebrate along with the writer. I love his side remarks, such as: "You will not see me create another implicit measure in this book. They are dead to me."
My only complaint is a formatting one. Much of the text is in a green font that shows as a much lighter gray on the regular Kindle, making it hard to read. Even on the Fire I would have preferred a choice with more contrast.
Despite that little annoyance, the book is a fast, enjoyable read with the information presented effectively and in an order that makes perfect sense to an Excel Pro. I am tempted to go ahead and buy a print copy just to have as a reference for my team, it is that good.

Excellent Book for Excel/PowerPivot Users

I'm a self-taught expert at Excel. I've been using the software for almost 25 years now. I also been creating and using Pivot Tables for the past 10 years, but despite my long experience with the subject, I certainly had some gaps due to my learning style.

Rob Collie's book not only fill in the gaps, it provides a solid foundation upon which you can confidently upgrade from Expert to Master.

I have never come across a technical book that delves deeply into a somewhat complex subject with such an easy to follow and funny style. You will hardly feel the need to read the same chapter again. Once you read it, you are ready to move on to next with a very clear understanding.

This book deserves 6 stars out of 5, and I highly recommend it for Excel/PowerPivot users

provides the superpower to make you a superhero in the office

I have owned this book from day one. As soon as it came in, I dived right in and read it. Having already have been a PowerPivot user from it first days of release, I actually thought I had a fair amount of knowledge .

How wrong I was..

This is a book I just keep turning too time and time again. And, for as many times that I have referred to it, i have recommended it to coworkers who have purchased as well.

Rob's practical style of teaching by use building blocks and comedy make this a MUST read for anyone who has been using PowerPivot or has heard of its "special powers".

One for certain reality is something that Rob mentions many times in the book. It's this: PowerPivot will make you more valuable . It will make you the superhero among your coworkers and employer when it comes to insights about your business. This is something I said to myself the the first time I saw PowerPivot at a Microsoft conference several year ago.

I have all 3 books that make up this series.. All are just awesome, but this is the foundation..

A must buy.... A must investment in your career...

About the Author
Christian Henry Tobler has been a longtime student of swordsmanship, focused on the study of medieval Fechtbucher (fight books) since the late 1990s. Now with five books, two instructional DVDs and a growing number of published articles and essays to his credit, he was the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Historical European Martial Arts in 2013. Mr. Tobler serves as Principal Instructor for the Selohaar Fechtschule. He lives with his wife in the United States, in rural Oxford, Connecticut, where he teaches a weekly class on medieval German combat, surrounded by far too many books and pieces of arms and armour for the size house that they live in.

How to fight with a sword

Some years ago a gentleman selling books told me that the vast majority of people who pick up a book about swordsmanship, don't particularly care about the historical detail. As long as they know it's a historically valid system, all they care about is whether the book can help them learn to swordfight.

Christian Tobler's first book, Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship is a fine book, analysing Sigmund Ringeck's 15th century combat treatise. In Fighting with the German Longsword, Christian has taken a simpler approach. Essentially he says, I have read and interpreted a whole bunch of 14th-16th century German works on swordsmanship, and based on them, this is how I teach my students. We have enough historical detail to convince us that this is a genuine historical art, used in real combat by medieval kights (and hence immeasurably superior to any modern made up system), but beyond that, we are just taught how to fight with a sword, in a series of straight forward and logical lessons. The book is presented clearly, with nice photos, well written explanatory text and a clear progression through the skills involved in mastering the art.

Anyone wanting to learn how to use a longsword, the late medieval knightly sword, used in two hands on foot, should make sure they obtain a copy of Fighting with the German Longsword.

This is not a refernce book, it's a long-distance teacher!

If you have ever wondered, "Can I learn to fight with a Longsword" this is the book for you. Christian Tobler answers that question with a definitive "yes" and backs up his assertion with an incredibly clear and precise teaching manual.

"Fighting" opens with a discussion and explanation of the knightly art of defense and provides grounding in the masters of the art. However, he moves quickly on to modern considerations of safety and practice tools. This is invaluable information for the modern practitioner of the art, as until now the only way to determine what tools one should invest in were internet searches and guesswork.

Then we enter, as students, into the meat of the work, which is practical information on the art. The basics of footwork, balance and timing are not neglected or assumed, but are explored with depth, as are the Guards and Wounders. From there, the manual moves through the Five Master Strikes, Wrestling, Winding and finally, though the main focus of the manual is on unarmored combat, ending with Armored Combat.

The uniqueness of this manual is in its teaching ability. Each concept is presented first theoretically, and then is followed up on with drills to physically impart the concept to the student. It's not just a read-along where you spend your time imagining someone else performing the technique, but rather a book which encourages you to get a partner, grab a waster, and try out the techniques for yourself. Finally, most chapters wrap up the techniques with a decision-tree, further reinforcing the use of each technique in its proper place. This means that each technique is presented at least three different ways, aiding the student in his learning process.

Though the book is filled with numerous photos, charts and drawings, the real prize is in the text. Mr. Tobler took the care to ensure that a person who simply read the text would fully understand the concept. He did not rely upon the pictures to tell the story as so many other Martial Arts books do, but rather the pictures merely support what he already told you in words.

I can say without a doubt that if you want to learn to use a Longsword in the German style, but have no access to a teacher or school in your area, you can do so with this book. In fact, I own two copies, one that goes about everywhere with me, one that stays at home. Order it today, you will not be disappointed.

This is not just an collection of techniques from German masters in the Liechtanauer tradition of fighting: It is a how to guide, one that presents the basics of footwork and body mechanics, and building off them with the core concepts and techniques to embody the reader with a good sense of the foundation of this system. One of the really excellent things about this book is that a complete novice can read it and grasp the concepts easily, while a seasoned practitioner can still read it from cover to cover and learn from it.

Fundamental concepts such as distance and timing are discussed, primary and secondary guards, feeling your opponent's actions through the blade, and understanding the five master strikes. While the majority of the book in focused on fighting without armor, it does go into armored fighting as well, and there is even a small section on spear, which helps illustrate key longsword concepts such as winding. There is also a section showing major concepts in unarmed fighting, as this forms the basis of much of the longsword.

Christian Tobler is also to be commended for his honest approach to research. The text is full of examples of where the techniques came from out of period manuscripts, and Christian clearly admits where he has stepped in to fill in some of the blanks that are not explicitly clear in the original texts. Naturally there are differences in interpretation amongst practitioners, but even the places where Christian has had to take some creative liberties, he is still making sure that his interpretations are as faithful to the system as possible.

Who benefits from this book? If you are a practitioner of the Liechtanauer school, then the answer is obvious. If you are a practitioner of a different school of longsword, this is a perfect way to get a broad understanding of how this system works. If you are a sword enthusiast, reenactor, historian or collector, you will undoubtedly find the book a great read. If I had to recommend a book that wasn't a primary source for an example of what a Western martial art should look like, this would be the book.

Excellent math resource

In the last few years I decided to learn more about mathematics. I think I may have had "math anxiety" early in my schooling. Either that or my brain isn't mathematically inclined.

I ordered this book hoping it would partially overcome my difficulty in learning math. I would say it does. The book is way too big and long to sit down and read as one would other types of books. However, it is a tremendous resource, well written and relatively easy to understand (that depends somewhat on one's math expertise). The title "Mathematics From the Birth of Numbers" describes the book exactly. It starts with, literally, the birth of numbers in "ancient" times and goes through all of the kinds of mathematics, such as number theory, calculus, geometry, etc. I recommend this book more as a reference than as a textbook or a book to read from cover to cover. For example, if you want to know something about number theory, go to that section of the book and read what you want to know. Same with other topics. Illustrations and equations are plentiful and answers to the exercises are in the back.

My only criticism which really isn't a criticism; the book is too heavy for me to sit comfortably in my recliner and read. It couldn't be any lighter in weight, though.

If you want a good history of mathematics plus explanations of most of the various mathematical disciplines, I would recommend this book.

Broad coverage of high school topics

This book is a wonderful supplement to the standard high school curriculum, beginning with algebra and extending through Euclidean geometry, analytic geometry, to differential and integral calculus, and including brief introductions to other "back of the book" topics like probability, determinants, and so on. It is full of hard-to-find details left behind by most texts, such as explicit solutions to third- and fourth- degree polynomials in one variable. It's fun to browse this book in search of such tidbits to fill in your mathematical knowledge.
"Mathematics..." is written at a level just right for someone who has progressed as far as calculus or college engineering math but no further. It is also nice that the myriad (albeit brief) historical references help connect the material with its initial development. Unfortunately, the lack of any contextual information (brief biographies would be welcome) make these references rather dry and unrevealing: authors, dates, and titles of publications is frequently all we get.
I have to agree, too, with the Willingboro reviewer: although this text covers a wide variety of traditional high school and early college topics, at the same time it clearly exhausts its author's knowledge of the subject and therefore cannot provide a foundation for proceeding further. It is akin to a travelogue that directs the reader along completed, well-worn paths, visiting all the conventional landmarks, without pointing out the existence of other paths, other points of interest, or taking the readers to lookout points and vistas suggesting territory remaining to be explored.
Almost all the topics covered are ancient, rarely extending beyond what was known by the middle of the 19th century. (A chapter on fractals is the only exception.) Many important and modern subjects are barely mentioned and certainly not developed beyond the limited introduction available in most high school texts: graph theory, number theory, complex analysis, algebraic geometry, functional analysis, group theory, Galois theory, differential geometry, category theory, ..., the list can go on and on. (For example, topology--a vast subject--gets less than three pages, whereas eight pages are devoted to illustrating the routine mechanics of solving euclidean triangles using trigonometry.) This is a shame, because the wealth of topics nevertheless discussed by this book provides an amazing foundation for introducing these modern ideas and pointing out their deeper implications and ramifications. As a result, mathematics comes out looking like a kind of beautiful fossil rather than an organic, evolving creature.

A Desert Island book for math lovers

How did this guy do it? He wasn't even a mathematician - he was a doctor. And he wrote a book that's fascinating for both mathematicians and non-mathematicians. The book goes all the way from the incention of numbers and the most elementary arithmetic, all the way through elemetary calculus. Along the way he manages to give at least an introduction to fractals, combinatorics, non-Euclidean geometry, harmonic analysis, and probability - all topics which the typical American student would probably miss on her or his way through the standard sequence of material leading up through calculus.

But Gullberg does much more than just present the material. He includes the history of how - and WHY - each major mathematical innovation was developed, placing the entire subject in a human and historical context that is missing from almost any other book on any of these many topics.

I don't care how much math you know - there are almost certainly historical facts in here that you haven't encountered before. And I don't care how LITTLE math you know - you'll find this book accessible and fascinating.

The only thing I didn't care for was the silly little limericks and cartoons scattered throughout the book. Most of them weren't funny, and served only to distract the reader from the fascinating material.

This book should be read thoroughly from page 1 through page 1039, and then read over and over again, as you dip randomly into whatever chapters happen to strike your fancy at any particular time, for the rest of your life. I originally bought a paperback copy, but I soon realized that I had to have a hardcover version that will stay on my shelf until the day I die - except when it's in my lap or on my desk.

Unparalleled and irreplaceable.

Ira Pohl is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. Very informative and easy to follow.

C by Dissection, Third Edition is a great book. It is very easy to understand and provides a lot of information. The dissections of programs and explanations of the various features of the C language are very informative, clear, and consistent, which makes things very understandable and easy to follow. After explaining major features and terms in the chapters, the exercises that follow them let the reader put their newly learned knowledge to practice and further strengthen their coding skills.
This book can be useful for both beginners and experienced programmers. Things such as advice on coding style and structured programming, system considerations for code portability, and forewarnings of common programming errors to avoid, help the programmer develop good coding habits and increasing skills. For those who want to learn C++, there is a "Moving to C++" section available at the end of each chapter and near the end of the book, which describe the new features of C++ and how to use them. The appendixes at the very end of the book provide a complete reference of functions and macros in the standard library, communicating with the preprocessor, explanations on bitwise operations, a comparison of ANSI C to Traditional C, and other useful guides.
I've had a great learning experience reading this book, and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn C and C++.

Use the Source, Luke!

One of the best intro C books I've seen.
Any hardcore programmer will tell you: the best way to learn is to look at somebody else's code. It helps if the source code is clearly designed, clearly written, commented, well documented.
C by Dissection does just that, by describing a concept, showing you example source for a program that puts that concept into practice, THEN, unlike so many other books, going over the example almost line-by-line, to explain what's going on, and why. Too many programming books briefly describe the concept, list a hundred or more lines of source code, then move on. This book walks you through the code and shows you both theory and practice.
The only regret I have about C by Dissection is that there isn't a companion volume, Advanced C by Dissection, or perhaps Data Structures and Algorithms (in C) by Dissection.
Note that two of the worst reviews above are from an experienced C/C++ programmer and from a Cobol programmer (presumably very experienced; I don't know many young Cobol programmers coming into the industry these days). I'm not surprised they didn't like the way C by Dissection approaches the topic. I'm not a beginner anymore (I read this book in 1992) but I still like this approach best - I came across this book on Amazon because I was hoping to find "Java by Dissection" by Kelly and Pohl! :-)

An excellent reference for the programming language C

While most other C programming books in the market concentrate on teaching the basics of the language, C by Dissection 3rd ed. goes further than that. It not only teaches you the proper usage of every essential function defined in standard class libraries, but also teaches them in a platform-independent and pragmatic manner, meaning that a DOS programmer will benefit from the tutoring as much as a UNIX programmer would. Many useful examples, practical discussions and overviews on common problems, common pitfalls and general suggestions are included and all the actual code is filtered through a tight seive of 'dissection', which is an extraordinary way of explaining the subjectively cryptic nature of the code, only visible to the newcomer. Also, there's an extra treat for the object-oriented generation of today: a 'Moving to C++' -discussion after each chapter, which alone makes the book worth reading. Even though the general look of the book is dry and has a special academic ting to it, it does not make it hard to follow, and furthermore teaches you all the programming essentials from a computer scientific point of view, making it compatible with official tutoring material. Put together, this is by far the best reference on the C programming language I have read, and I'm sure it's king-status will be preserved for quite some time in the future.
