Playing it safe

[[VIDEOID:da8511a0d8ef4fa6dee5fa4cff496fdc]]Fans of the game should appreciate this artbook although I feel that the designs did not really push the boundaries when it comes to sci-fi concept art.

The 192-page hardcover is split into several chapters and covers the previsualization, environments, aliens, ADVENT and XCOM.

In a world controlled by aliens, the new cities are now being designed with a rather sterile, clinical look, much to the vision of the aliens no doubt. Too much order, too clean. Luckily, there are still the shanty and small town environments to make things visually more interesting. It's quite a contrast when you compare the cities with abandoned towns with signs of life that have lived there. Design of the alien facilities look different too, and quite unexpectedly have more curves versus the blocky city style.

Character designs of the aliens and enemies are nice, detailed and come with sketches too. The Advent also look cool, stylish and futuristic. There are also vehicle designs, spacecrafts, troop transport, cars, and other props, e.g. weapons and interior designs.

Overall, the quality of the art is definitely top notch. However when it comes to the concepts, the ideas behind, I feel that the game studio is playing it too safe. The art feels so familiar, like I've seen them before. The art feels like they could come from Mass Effect. Yes, there are differences such as the ADVENT troopers and mechs being more sleek looking, but to me, the art direction quite similar to Mass Effect. That's just what I felt.

So yeah, it's still a good artbook but it could have been better if the game studios are more daring which unfortunately is not the case as nowadays it's all about making safe games that can make money.

An okay art book

Not as comprehensive as I would have liked. Some items (like enemies) only have half a page of concept art, while maps and scenery can take up entire pages. Just not "wowed" by it.

My son really loves XCOM 2 game, so he is very much into everything about XCOM 2. The book itself is in very high quality print, the graphics are very fine and high quality. My son loves this book.

Only just okay

This book has a lot of stuff in it. It's got a good overview of how to look at your supply chain starting with the supplier of your supplier, and going through to the customer of your customer.

It's got a lot of real world examples, and each of the six chapters ends in a 10-page real world case study of a large corporation.

However, I just couldn't get into it, even though I read it cover to cover. This was a hard book to trudge through, probably because of its very narrow target audience.

This book is written to the level of Senior Vice President of International Operations at a $800+ million company. It's at a pretty high level and maybe that's why it was so hard to read.

With only a few minor modifications, this book could be called: "World Class Marketing" or "Quality Improvement: New Directions." It's technically about Supply Chain Management, but it's at such a very high level.

Excellent book for C-Level Execs

This is the first book I've found that discusses supply chain management in a way that makes it relevant and understandable for the C-level executive. And the examples prove that real ROI value can be created by looking more carefully at a company's supply chain. As an operations executive myself, I've had trouble getting other members of my company's executive management team to pay sufficient attention to supply chain issues. The five core disciplines from this book are easy to explain, and people now understand what we need to do to make our supply chain a competitive advantage.

I was happy to find a book that includes numerous, practical examples from companies that I can relate to and advice I can actually use.

About the Author
Meegan Jones is an events professional focusing her work on developing sustainable management solutions for live events. Apart from producing practical solutions to sustainability challenges, working with industry peers she has researched and developed benchmarking and systems for assessing the impact of events. She uses her experience in marketing and event management across the retail, music and media industries to create scenarios which engage and activate the audience, performers, crew and the supply chain. She worked for the past three years in the UK as Sustainability Co-ordinator for Festival Republic (Reading, Leeds, Latitude & Glastonbury Festivals), developed sustainability solutions at Peats Ridge Festival in Australia, and has worked on sustainability issues for Live Earth India and the London Marathon. She is currently sitting on the working group for Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) events industry sector supplement, is global greening consultant for the next round of Live Earth events, and is the events and festivals consultant for UK-based music industry climate impact organization Julie's Bicycle.

About the Author
Beverly DeVries, Ed.D., has been teaching at Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma since 1993. She teaches reading diagnosis and primary and elementary literature/language arts. In all her courses, she demonstrates how teachers can use authentic assessment and instruction, using quality children's literature. She is presently on the Standards and Ethics Committee of the International Reading Association (IRA) and is the reading specialist on the Oklahoma Commission Program Advisory Board. She presents workshops on Writing Successful Reading Program Reports at the state and national level.

DeVries received her Ed.D. from Oklahoma State University. Before beginning her university teaching career, she spent most of her years in the middle school, teaching composition and reading. It was during those years that she recognized the importance of early literacy intervention.
